Responsible Trekking and Clean-up Initiatives
We love our mountains too much to leave them messy. See how our trek family works together to keep Karnataka's trails pristine for everyone.
Our team of trek leads after a successful clean-up drive at Ethina Bhuja. We are committed to keeping our beloved mountains clean.
The result of our clean-up drive. We collected a shocking amount of plastic bottles, cans, and other waste left behind on the trails.
A sad sight: alcohol bottles and plastic waste collected from the trail. This is not how we should treat mother nature. We trek responsibly.
Our founder, Manju, speaking to the team about the importance of responsible trekking and keeping our environment clean.
A pile of waste collected from the trail, including slippers, plastic raincoats, and bottles. We pack out everything we pack in.

Collecting waste at the peak during constant rain was challenging, but our team was determined to make a difference.
About Our Commitment: Responsible Adventures
When you trek with us, you join a team that actively clears the path. We do not just hike; we carry dedicated waste collection bags on every trip to ensure we leave the trail better than we found it. During our recent Ethina Bhuja clean-up drive, our leads collected everything from discarded plastic bottles to abandoned footwear, showing that nature belongs to everyone and deserves our protection.
Why We Clean the Trails
We believe trekking is about a connection with the outdoors, not just the summit view. Over the last fourteen years, we have seen trails grow in popularity, and sadly, in litter. Our 'Responsible Adventures' initiative is our way of giving back. We do not just organize treks; we organize clean-up drives to remove waste that others have left behind.
The Ethina Bhuja Clean-Up
During a recent weekend when heavy weather prevented us from running our standard itineraries, our trek leads headed to Ethina Bhuja in Chikmagalur. The reality we faced was shocking. We found piles of alcohol bottles, tin cans, and plastic raincoats strewn across the trail. It was a tough, rainy climb, but our team was determined to haul every kilogram of trash down to the base for proper disposal.
How You Can Help
When you join our trek family, you become part of this movement. We do not preach, but we do practice what we preach:
- Pack In, Pack Out: We ensure that every piece of trash brought onto the mountain leaves with us.
- Mindful Trekking: We educate our trekkers on the local ecosystem and the impact of waste in the Western Ghats.
- Community Action: We encourage every trekker to pick up at least one piece of litter they see on the trail.
Our goal is simple: keep the Western Ghats wild and beautiful for generations to come. Join us on our next adventure and help us maintain the magic of these mountains.
Karnataka Hikes
We started Karnataka Hikes to share our love for the Ghats, and that includes protecting them. We are just a group of friends who refuse to watch our favorite trails get ruined by litter, so we make sure every hike involves leaving the place a little cleaner. When you join us, you are not just a trekker, you are part of a family that values the environment as much as the summit view.
