Turn Your Old Sarees into Kids' Heirloom Outfits
That saree in your trunk holds memories. Let’s turn it into something your little one can wear, twirl, and cherish. I guide you through every stitch, transforming fabric into a story.
This video shows our entire journey. We start with a design consultation and a sketch, then carefully work with your sentimental fabric to create a completely new heirloom piece. This transformation from a mother's saree to a child's gown is the heart of what I do.
About From Saree to Story: Our Process
Before we snip a single thread, I do a fabric assessment. Not every saree takes to stiff tailoring like a lehenga or a jacket, so I check the drape and strength first. It is my way of ensuring that whatever we create, be it a twirly gown or a dapper bundi jacket, stays comfortable for your child and holds up to all the running around they will do.
How We Stitch Your Story
Turning a 5 to 9 yard saree into a children's garment is a delicate process. It is about more than just sewing; it is about respecting the fabric that holds your family history. Here is how we make it happen in my Mumbai workshop:
1. The Design Chat We start with a conversation. You share the saree and the vision. Does it need to be a grand lehenga for a wedding or a soft everyday frock? I sketch out the design, planning exactly how to place the border and the pallu to make your child’s outfit pop.
2. The Deconstruction This is where the magic begins. My team carefully prepares the fabric, checking for wear and tear. We steam press and stabilize the material. If it is a heavier silk, we prepare it for structure. If it is a soft chiffon or cotton, we plan the lining to ensure it is breathable and non-itchy for your little one.
3. Tailoring and Volume For gowns and lehengas, we add layers. We use Shantoon for structure and 100% Malmal cotton against the skin, so it feels gentle. We incorporate Hard Net or Cancan to give it that perfect flare for twirling. If we are making a Nehru jacket for a boy, we use a specialized fusing process to ensure the fabric looks crisp and tailored.
Why This Matters These pieces are meant to be worn, loved, and passed down. By using your own fabric, we create a one-of-a-kind garment that tells a story no store-bought dress can match. Whether it is transforming a wedding saree into a festive set or a casual silk piece into a birthday frock, we are here to handle the tension so you do not have to. Kuch tension mat lo, I am here for you.
