Behind the Art: My Caricature Process
Ever wonder how a face goes from a simple sketch to a full caricature? Here is a look at my process, whether I am working digitally on my iPad, using watercolors on paper, or prepping for a live event.
This video shows the digital drawing and coloring process for my "girl in a wind tunnel" cartoon. You can see how I build up the layers, from line art to shading and final color.
Every great drawing starts with a simple sketch. This is the initial pencil outline for my Hulk Hogan caricature, mapping out the pose and proportions.
The next step is inking. Here, I've gone over the pencil sketch with bold black markers to create clean, strong lines for the Hulk Hogan piece.
Adding color with markers and pastels. This stage brings the Hulkamania caricature to life, with the iconic yellow and red outfit.
The finished Hulk Hogan caricature. This piece combines bold line work with soft pastel shading for the background, creating a dynamic and powerful image.
Step 1: The basic structural sketch. This is how I begin a portrait, using simple shapes to build the foundation of the face, as seen in this caricature of a priest.
Step 2: The refined line art. After the initial sketch, I create the final black and white drawing, focusing on clean lines and expressive features.
Step 3: Adding color. The final stage is applying watercolor to bring the portrait to life, adding depth, shading, and a background.

A tribute to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. This digital caricature is my way of honoring his contributions to the nation.
About Behind the Art: Process & Style Studies
Before I start any piece, I ask for a few reference photos that show your personality, not just your face. Whether it is a hobby, a favorite outfit, or a specific expression, capturing that little detail is what makes a caricature feel like you and not just another drawing.
How I Approach Your Caricature
-
Digital Art: For my digital portraits, I use a tablet. It allows for clean lines and vibrant colors. It is perfect if you need a file for printing invitations or posting on social media. I usually start with the structure, then build up the layers of expression.
-
Watercolor on Paper: If you prefer a traditional feel, I use high-quality watercolor. It has that old-school vibe. I start with a pencil sketch, go over it with ink, and then add the paint. It is a slower process, but the texture is something you cannot replicate digitally.
-
Live Events: This is different. There is no undo button. When I am at a wedding or a corporate event, I rely on speed and observation. I have to catch the vibe of the guest in a few minutes. It is about exaggerating the features just enough to get a laugh, but keeping it flattering.
Why the Process Matters
Whether it is a wooden standee for your desk or a live sketch, the goal is always the same: masti. I do not believe in perfect art. I believe in art that gets a reaction. If you are in Pune, let us chat about what style fits your event best.
