Mastering Impulse Control and Focus
A calm dog is a happy dog. Impulse control is not about suppressing energy, it is about teaching your dog to think before they act. Whether you have a jumping puppy or a distracted adult, I will help you build the focus your dog needs to navigate the world calmly.
Tiger, a show line German Shepherd, demonstrates excellent food manners. He waits calmly for the 'yes' command before taking his food, a key exercise in teaching impulse control.
Papper, an energetic Indie boy, practices his 'down-stay' while I place treats on the floor. He learns to wait for the release command, showing that even high-energy dogs can learn patience and self-control.
About Mastering Impulse Control
The exercises you see here, like holding a calm 'down-stay' around food, are not just tricks. They are the foundation of self-control. This process is about teaching you how to be the handler. We start with small, manageable wins in your living room, ensuring your dog learns to look to you for direction rather than reacting to every distraction, like the door opening or food falling.
Impulse control is the difference between a chaotic walk and a pleasant one. It is the core of reliable obedience. If your dog struggles with stealing food, bolting through doors, or losing focus in the park, they are missing this critical skill.
How We Build Focus
My approach is to replace reactivity with engagement. We don't just say 'no'. We teach the dog to look at you and wait for a release cue before they eat, move, or explore. This creates a thinking dog, not just an obedient one.
- Food Permission: Essential for dogs that get overexcited at mealtime. We teach them to wait patiently until they get the 'Yes' signal.
- Threshold Management: No more bolting through open doors or gates. Your dog learns to wait at the threshold until you give permission.
- Distraction Training: We take these skills outside. Getting that eye contact in a park full of smells and other dogs is where the real training happens.
Why I Coach You
I am not just training your dog; I am training you to be the coach. When you understand how to use markers like 'Yes' or a clicker, and how to read your dog's body language, the training sticks. It works for every breed, from energetic Indie pups to strong working breeds. We use humane, modern methods to make sure the dog actually enjoys the process. It is about patience, consistency, and a lot of 'Shabash!' when they get it right.
