My Dance Journey: From Cricket to Choreography
Dance isn't just about steps for me; it is a journey of unlearning and finding real joy. Here is a peek into my life, my philosophy, and why I believe dancers are nothing short of magicians.
A clip from my conversation with Melvin Louis on the 'Podcast Rush 101'. I talk about my early days as a serious cricketer and how dance was just a side thing back then.
In this podcast clip, I share my thoughts on the "boycott" culture in the dance community. I believe in supporting all artists and am against creating insecurity among students.
I used to have stage fright as a kid. This post talks about my journey from being a nervous performer to an artist who feels a magical transformation on stage.
A candid moment of me speaking. This reflects the connection between my dance journey and my personal growth.
A moment of gratitude. I am thankful for every person I meet and every lesson I learn through my journey in dance.
A constant reminder to myself: keep your head up and believe. The universe is within you.
Another angle of a quiet, reflective moment. Self-belief is the foundation of any artist's journey.
From the heart to the soul. A candid smile captured in the studio, reflecting my love for what I do.
I am not perfect, but I will always be real. This is a core part of my philosophy as a teacher and a person.
Dancers are magicians. They make people see the music and feel something in their heart. This is what I believe.
About My Journey: Beyond the Dance Floor
Many people ask if you need to be a 'perfect' dancer to join my classes. The truth is, I am not perfect either. Whether I am leading a high-energy workshop or teaching basics at the studio, I focus on feeling the music rather than hitting the moves with technical perfection. If you have ever felt nervous on stage or judged for not having flawless technique, know that in my space, you only need to show up as you are.
From Cricket to the Dance Floor
Many do not know that dance was not my first love. Growing up, I was a dedicated cricketer. I treated the pitch like a classroom, learning discipline from every match. That rigor stayed with me even when I transitioned to the dance floor. It is why I treat choreography not as a drill, but as a discipline that needs shiddat (passion).
Overcoming the Fear
I was not always the confident person you see in the studio. As a kid, I had stage fright. The fear of being watched, of forgetting steps—it was real. I had to learn, unlearn, and perform repeatedly to find my rhythm. When I tell my students to just move, it comes from a place of having been in that nervous spot myself.
My Philosophy
I do not run a boot camp. I run a community. Whether you catch my classes in South Delhi or join an intensive program, my focus remains the same: creating a no-judgment zone. We focus on the crux of the heart, connecting with the music rather than just memorizing counts. You will find me using Hindi, Punjabi, and English in class, and quoting everything from Rumi to Bollywood dialogues, because dance is a language, and it should feel like home.
If you are looking for a place where you can be bindaas (carefree) and work on your own vibe, you are in the right place.
Rajat Bakshi
Namaste, I’m Rajat. I grew up a Delhi boy with a cricket bat in my hand, but life had other plans. Now, I spend my days helping people find their own groove through dance, focusing more on the vibe and less on the pressure to be perfect.
