Terrarium Care and Plant Maintenance Guide
Bringing a miniature garden home is the first step, but keeping it happy is the real journey. Here is a simple guide to watering, light, and solving those common growth issues.
Here are the complete care instructions for your open terrarium. Following these tips on light, water, and location will help your succulents and other plants flourish.
Is your succulent stretching out and growing tall? This is a common issue called etiolation, caused by a lack of sunlight. This guide explains why it happens and how to prevent it.
About this collection
The biggest secret to keeping your terrarium alive is controlled watering. Don't drown your succulents! We always recommend using a syringe to target the roots directly, giving them about 5-10ml once a week. If you notice your plants stretching or growing tall, that is just them reaching out for more light, which means it is time to move them a little closer to a bright window.
Understanding Your Green Creation
Nature is resilient, but indoor environments can be tricky. Whether you attended one of our workshops at our Kasturi Nagara studio or have a DIY kit at home, these tips will help your plants thrive.
The Watering Routine
For open succulent terrariums, the goal is to keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy. Use a syringe or dropper to apply water at the base of the plant. If you have a closed bio-dome, it creates its own water cycle, so you rarely need to water it. If you see heavy condensation, simply open the lid for a few hours.
Finding the Right Light
Succulents and tropical plants love bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves through the glass. If your plant starts looking 'leggy' or stretched, it is a classic sign of etiolation—the plant is searching for more light. Simply move it to a brighter spot near a window with good air circulation.
Common Troubleshooting
- Yellow leaves: Often a sign of overwatering. Check the soil before adding more.
- Wrinkled leaves: The plant might be thirsty. A small drink usually perks them right up.
- Mold: In closed terrariums, this happens with too much moisture. Improve airflow by leaving the lid off for a day.
