Tree Transplantation Process: Saving Mature Trees in Mumbai
Moving a mature tree is a precise, high-stakes operation. See how we protect root systems, use crane-assisted lifts, and secure every tree for a successful relocation.
This video provides a glimpse into our complete workflow. You can see our team member marking a tree for identification, the careful pruning of branches, the critical moment of the crane-assisted lift, and a dump truck delivering fresh soil to prepare the tree's new home. Each step is executed with precision and care.
About The Transplantation Process
The most critical phase is the root ball preparation. If we damage those delicate root hairs during excavation, the tree won't recover in its new home. We wrap the root ball in hessian cloth and jute rope immediately after digging to ensure the soil stays intact and the roots are protected from drying out while the crane is positioned for the lift.
Our Approach to Mature Tree Relocation
Moving a mature tree isn't just about digging and moving; it’s about survival. Our process is designed to minimize transplant shock and ensure the tree establishes itself quickly in the new pit.
The Preparation Phase
Before a single piece of equipment arrives, we conduct a site assessment to evaluate the tree's species, health, and size. We then perform a canopy reduction, pruning 30-40% of the branches. This is essential to reduce the load on the root system while the tree focuses its energy on re-establishing roots rather than maintaining leaves.
The Root Ball and Lift
This is where the real work happens. We excavate a 3-4ft trench around the base. We handle the root ball with extreme care, wrapping it in jute and hessian to keep the existing soil—and the beneficial microbes—intact. We utilize 12T to 14T cranes for the lifting. Crane-assisted relocation allows us to move the tree vertically and place it with precision into the new site, preventing damage to the trunk or bark.
Planting and Stabilization
Once the tree is in its new pit, we don't just dump soil back in. We use a mix of river soil, vermicompost, and fresh manure to create an environment that encourages root growth. We also apply IBA rooting hormones and anti-fungal powders to prevent infection. Finally, we install wooden logs or bamboo anchors to keep the tree steady against wind and movement until the roots take hold.
What You Need to Know
Relocating trees is a regulated activity. While we handle the heavy lifting, machinery, and technical execution, BMC or TMC Tree Authority permissions are legally required and must be secured by the property owner. Please ensure your site access is clear—we need enough road width for a flatbed truck and a crane to enter both the pickup and drop-off locations.
