The Muddy Feet Cob Building Experience
Reconnect with the earth through the joy of natural building. Join me in Vashi to get your hands dirty, stomp some mud, and rediscover your connection with nature.
The joy of the "cob dance". Mixing mud with your feet is the most effective and fun way to prepare the material, a technique that brings laughter and connects you to the earth.
Here, I explain how adding hay acts as natural reinforcement, binding the clay to create a strong, homogenous building material, just as our ancestors did.
A close-up of the process we call "lahanpan," or reconnecting with your inner child. There's a unique sensory satisfaction in feeling the earth beneath your feet.
The final stages of building with mitti. Participants learn to apply and smooth the cob mixture, shaping it into a solid, durable structure with their own hands.
From mixing the cob to the final group photo, this video captures the collaborative and joyful spirit of learning to build naturally with us in Vashi.
About The "Muddy Feet" Cob Building Experience
You will be working directly with red soil, fibrous binders like hay, and water to create a strong, homogeneous building material. This 4-hour session involves the 'cob dance'—a fun, barefoot technique where we prepare the mix together—followed by sculpting small artifacts. Please wear comfortable, old clothes you don't mind getting messy, as this is a fully hands-on, tactile experience in an outdoor setting in Vashi.
Building with the Earth
Cob construction is an ancient technique that remains one of the most sustainable ways to build. By mixing soil, straw, and water, you create a material that is not only durable and fireproof but also deeply satisfying to handle. In my workshop, we move beyond theory.
What to Expect:
- The Mix: We start by understanding soil composition and the crucial ratios of clay to sand. You will learn why the addition of hay (fibrous binders) acts as a reinforcement, creating a structure that lasts for generations.
- The Technique: You will practice 'foot stomping,' the most effective method for blending these materials. It’s not just about labor; it’s a rhythmic, grounding process that connects you to the earth.
- The Art: After preparing the cob, we move into sculpting. You will learn to hand-model small earthen pieces—like diyas or busts—that you can take home as a reminder of the experience.
Why This Matters
In our fast-paced urban life, we often lose touch with the natural world. This workshop is designed as a space to step back, get messy, and experience 'lahanpan' (the inner child). It is a community-focused event; you will be sharing, laughing, and learning alongside other art lovers and sustainability enthusiasts. We cap our batches at 10 people to ensure everyone gets enough guidance and space to really connect with the process and each other. Whether you are curious about natural architecture or just need a creative break from your routine, you will leave with a new skill and a calmer mind.
