The Ultimate Guide to Sunscreen
Most sunscreen advice online is just noise. Let me help you actually protect your skin with science that works for Indian phototypes.
For Indian skin types, UVA rays and visible light are the main culprits for pigmentation and aging. I explain why you must look for a PA++++ rating on your sunscreen for optimal protection against these specific concerns.
Thinking you can skip sunscreen in winter is a big mistake. The sun's UV rays are still strong, and when combined with dry winter skin, the damage can accelerate wrinkles and dark spots. Always use SPF 50 or higher.
Your car's windshield might block UVB rays, but the aging UVA rays pass straight through the glass. This silent, permanent damage happens even on cloudy days, so don't skip sunscreen even when you're driving.
Good skincare doesn't have to be expensive. Responding to Zakir Khan's comment, I share four effective, dermatologist-approved sunscreens that are all under 500 rupees, so you can protect your skin and save your money.
When choosing a sunscreen, there are five key things to look for. This video breaks down what SPF, broad-spectrum, PA rating, and water resistance actually mean so you can read labels like a pro.
This is part two of my sunscreen series, where I explain how to apply it correctly. It should be the last layer of your morning routine, and you need to use the two-finger rule to ensure you're applying enough.
If you have dry skin, you should look for sunscreens with a creamy or lotion-based texture that provides hydration. This video includes some of my top recommendations for products that protect without drying out your skin.
Don't miss a spot. Many people forget to apply sunscreen to their eyelids, ears, neck, and hands. These areas are just as exposed to sun damage and show signs of aging too.

This is your daily reminder. The most effective anti-aging and anti-pigmentation product you can use is sunscreen. Don't skip it.
About The Ultimate Guide to Sunscreen
The biggest mistake I see in my clinic is ignoring the PA rating. For our Indian climate, you need a broad-spectrum sunscreen that shields against both UVA (the aging rays) and visible light, not just UVB. If you aren't checking for a PA++++ label, you are essentially using a moisturizer rather than true sun protection. Sunscreen is not just for beach days; it is the most critical anti-aging product in your daily routine.
Why Sunscreen is Your Best Anti-Aging Tool
Many patients ask if they can skip sunscreen when it is cloudy, winter, or while they are indoors. The answer is a firm no. UV rays, specifically UVA, penetrate glass and are present year-round. These are the main culprits behind pigmentation, melasma, and fine lines. If you are struggling with stubborn dark spots, your treatment plan starts with strict sun protection.
Reading the Label
Don't just look for an SPF number. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) primarily measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. However, for Indian skin types, which are prone to pigmentation, we need protection against UVA and visible light.
- Look for: PA++++ rating. This is the gold standard for UVA protection.
- Consistency: Cream-based for dry skin, gel or matte-finish for oily or acne-prone skin.
The Correct Application
Most people apply far too little. You need to use the two-finger rule—enough product to cover two full finger lengths—to achieve the protection stated on the bottle.
- Morning Routine: Apply as the last step of your morning skincare before makeup.
- The Exposure Gap: Apply 20 minutes before stepping out so the film can form properly.
- Reapplication: If you are outdoors or sitting near a window, you must reapply every 3 hours. Sweat and friction will break down your protection throughout the day.
Common Mistakes
- Missing Spots: Don't forget your eyelids, ears, neck, and the backs of your hands. These areas show signs of aging first.
- Winter Neglect: Your skin barrier is often compromised in winter due to dryness, making it even more susceptible to UV-induced damage.
