Skincare Basics: A Dermatologist’s Guide to Healthy Skin
Stop following viral hacks that wreck your skin. Real skin health starts with understanding your barrier, not buying the next expensive serum.
Step 1: Reconsider your cleanser. If your cleanser contains harsh acids or exfoliants, winter is the time to switch to a gentle, barrier-protecting formula.
Step 2: Moisturizing is non-negotiable. Always apply a moisturizer with ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid on slightly damp skin to lock in hydration.
Step 3: Avoid over-exfoliating, especially in winter. Cut back to once a week and pause if your skin feels tight or irritated.
Step 4: Hydrate from the inside. Topical products alone are not enough. Drinking enough water and eating healthy fats are essential for healthy skin.
A key dermatologist's tip: If your skin is suddenly itchy, dull, or breaking out, your skin barrier may be compromised. The best first step is to simplify your routine.
About Skincare Basics & Routines
Many patients come to my Vashi clinic after ruining their skin with aggressive internet trends like harsh physical scrubs or excessive chemical exfoliation. Before you add another product to your shelf, understand that less is usually more. If your skin feels itchy, tight, or is constantly breaking out, your skin barrier is likely compromised. Your routine should be simple, consistent, and science-backed—not just whatever is trending on social media.
Simplify Your Routine
Internet pe har cheez kaam nahi karti (Not everything on the internet works). Most people come to me with one problem: they are doing too much. You do not need a 10-step routine. You need a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen that actually fits your skin type. If you have oily skin, don't use heavy creams. If you have dry skin, avoid harsh foaming cleansers that strip away natural oils.
Why Your Skin Barrier Matters
Think of your skin barrier as a brick wall. When you over-exfoliate or use products with harsh acids, you are essentially knocking down the bricks. This lets moisture escape and irritants enter, causing redness, itching, and acne. If your skin is acting up, the first step is always to stop all actives and go back to basics: gentle cleanser and a barrier-repairing moisturizer containing ceramides or hyaluronic acid.
Seasonal Adjustments
Your skin is not the same in Navi Mumbai summers as it is in winter.
- Winter: Air is dry and humidity drops. You need heavier moisturizers and must cut back on exfoliation to prevent flaking.
- Summer/Monsoon: Humidity increases, leading to more sebum (oil) production. You might need a lighter gel-based moisturizer and a non-comedogenic sunscreen.
The Doctor’s Rule
Always check if your cleanser has acids or strong exfoliants before using it daily. If you are struggling with persistent acne, pigmentation, or uneven texture, a store-bought product will only do so much. A personalized consultation helps us identify if you need clinical treatments like chemical peels or medical-grade topicals to get your skin back on track.
