Sacred Spaces: Home Temples
I design prayer spaces that combine traditional motifs with quiet, meditative atmospheres. My approach ensures your temple feels like a personal sanctuary within the home.
A glimpse into the striking red home temple in Hyderabad. The view from the living room reveals a space that is intensely spiritual, with hand-painted walls and carved details creating a powerful sanctuary within the home.
The ceiling of the red temple, covered in an intricate hand-painted mandala. Every surface in this space was a canvas for artisans, whose dedicated work over 90 days brought a sense of meditative calm to the bold color palette.
A detailed view of the hand-painted 'Tree of Life' motif on the temple wall. The delicate white painting on the vibrant red background showcases the finesse of the Jaipur artists and adds a soulful, traditional narrative to the space.
The completed home temple in Hyderabad, a space designed to command devotion and awe. The combination of the bold red, the intricate white hand-painting, and the traditional carved elements creates a sanctuary that is both grand and deeply personal.
It was an honor to design this serene home temple for Kangana Ranaut in her Delhi bungalow. The space is grounded in tradition, with a beautifully crafted wooden frame, a Pichwai painting, and hand-painted details that reflect authenticity and strength.
About Sacred Spaces: Home Temples
For the red temple shown here, two artists from Jaipur worked on-site for nearly 90 days to hand-paint the walls and ceilings. This intensive labor is how we create a space that feels truly sacred, moving beyond simple decor to establish an atmosphere of meditative stillness.
Designing a prayer space is not about following a standardized layout. It is about creating a boundary where the noise of the outside world fades. In my work, I often lean into bold choices like deep red or intense pigment to define the volume, but balance them with intricate, handmade motifs.
When planning your home temple, we consider factors beyond aesthetics:
- Orientation and Vastu: We ensure the layout respects traditional principles while fitting the constraints of modern apartments.
- Artistic Depth: Whether it is a Pichwai painting or Jaipur-style murals, these elements are not just decorations. They provide a narrative anchor for the room.
- Materiality: Using natural materials like wood, stone, and lime plaster helps the temple feel grounded and timeless, rather than factory-made.
For the project in Hyderabad, the goal was to craft a space that felt both grand and intimate. By dedicating months to hand-painting every surface, we transformed a corner of the house into a sanctuary that commands silence. In contrast, the Delhi project for Kangana Ranaut utilized a classic wooden frame and traditional artwork to return a heritage bungalow to its original, soulful rhythm.
Whether you have a dedicated room or a small alcove, the approach remains the same. We define a space that is yours alone, reflecting your journey, your history, and your moments of gratitude. If you are looking to create a temple that feels like a distinct, quiet retreat within your home, let us discuss how to make that happen.
