My Journey: Why I Choose Trust Over Control
I didn't start my career in a classroom. I started it with a rescue dog who taught me that behavior isn't about commands, but about the bond you share. Here is the story behind why I do what I do.
An unpopular opinion: I don't believe in using an adult dog to "correct" a puppy. It's risky for both dogs and doesn't teach the puppy the right skills.
Instead of letting dogs "figure it out," I teach puppies to ignore other dogs from a safe distance. This teaches them neutrality and prevents reactivity from developing.
A client asks for the definition of socialization. My response clarifies that it's about creating a database of positive experiences, but I would never put a well-behaved dog off-leash with an unsocialized puppy.
This screenshot shows my direct advice: putting an off-leash dog with a puppy who has missed their socialization window is not going to help either dog.
Understanding your dog's body language is the most basic and essential skill for any pet parent. Here, I'm reading Phoebe's stress signals during a blow-dry and giving her a break.
Urban life is stressful for our dogs. I always encourage my clients to plan a weekly activity, like a hike or a swim, to let their dogs decompress and just be dogs.
About this collection
When you work with me, you aren't hiring a trainer to fix a machine. You are partnering with someone who knows exactly how heavy it feels to have a dog who is scared of the world, because I’ve been the person on the other end of that leash. My approach, rooted in 10 years of behavioral science and trial and error, is about teaching your dog to be neutral in a city that’s constantly overstimulating them, rather than forcing them into submission.
How My Personal Journey Became My Method
Confident Dogs didn't start as a business. It started with Junior, a rescue who taught me more than any textbook ever could, and Phoebe, whose wild spirit forced me to trade 'alpha' theories for patience. Back then, I saw trainers using chains and fear, and I knew that was not the life I wanted for my dog. I chose a different path—one based on reward-based training and positive reinforcement.
Why I Focus on 'Why' Over 'What'
Most people come to me asking how to stop a behavior. We start by asking why it’s happening. Is your dog aggressive because they are insecure? Is that 'naughtiness' actually a sign of overstimulation in an urban environment like Bangalore?
My 10 years of experience in canine behavior have taught me that we cannot punish a dog for feeling scared or anxious. When I say 'Shabash, good boy!' to a client’s dog, I mean it. I am celebrating a moment of choice where they decided to look at you instead of the trigger.
My Philosophy: No Shortcuts
- Science-based, not force-based: I will never use shock, prong, or choke collars. They break the trust that took us months to build.
- The Human element: I coach you to be the expert for your dog. You are the one who lives with them, so you need the skills to handle the everyday chaos.
- Urban Reality: I know what it’s like to navigate HRBR Layout or busy Bangalore streets with a reactive dog. We build plans that work for your actual life, not a hypothetical, perfect world.
If you want overnight fixes, I am not the trainer for you. But if you are ready to put in the time to build a calm, confident, and trusting relationship, I am here to help you get there.
Confident Dogs
I’m Nivedita, and I founded Confident Dogs because I believe your relationship with your pet shouldn't be about control. I am here to coach you through the tough stuff—aggression, fear, or just figuring out why your dog acts the way they do—using methods that actually build trust.
