Understanding how to hold on is the fastest way to level up your climbing. From beginner-friendly jugs to technical crimps, here is how you can climb smarter and safer at our gym.

A collage showcasing the variety of holds and grips you'll encounter in climbing. Mastering these is key to becoming a versatile and efficient climber.

The Mono Pocket requires precision and strength in a single finger. It's an advanced grip that should be used carefully to protect your tendons.

The Pinch grip, where you squeeze a hold using your thumb in opposition to your fingers, is excellent for building hand and forearm strength.

A Sloper has no distinct edge, relying on an open hand and friction. Your body position and balance are more important than pure strength when using slopers.

This image shows the difference between a Full Crimp (thumb wrapped over fingers for maximum power) and a Half Crimp (a safer, more sustainable 90 degree grip).

The Jug is a large, easy to hold grip that's perfect for beginners or for taking a rest mid route. The bracelet says it all: "Climbed It. Owned It."

About this collection

When you are starting out, the biggest mistake is over-gripping. Whether you are attacking a jug or balancing on a sloper, the goal is efficiency. We see new climbers burn their forearms out in minutes because they hold on for dear life. At our Aya Nagar gym, our coaches teach you to trust your feet and use your skeletal structure, not just your grip strength. It saves energy and keeps you on the wall longer.

Climbing is a puzzle, and your hands are the keys. Understanding different holds isn't just about strength; it is about knowing how to interact with the wall.

Breaking Down the Grips

  • The Jugs: These are your best friends. They are deep, easy to hold, and perfect for catching your breath mid-route.
  • The Crimps: You will see these on harder routes. A full crimp is powerful, but it puts serious stress on your tendons. We always encourage beginners to practice the open-hand or half-crimp method to stay injury-free.
  • The Slopers: It is all about friction here. Do not try to squeeze them like a toy. Instead, open your palm, keep your body weight directly below the hold, and trust the friction. It feels counter-intuitive, but your palm does the work, not your fingers.

Why Technique Matters

Many people think climbing is just upper body strength, but it is actually about movement. By mastering these grips, you stop fighting the wall and start moving with it. Whether you are training for lead climbing or just dropping in for a weekend session, understanding these mechanics makes every route feel more accessible.

Chinta mat karo (Don't worry) if you feel shaky on your first try. Our instructors at Climb Central Delhi are always hanging around the mats—if a route feels impossible, just ask for a tip. We love breaking down a beta (climbing solution) together. We are here to help you get stronger, refine your movement, and most importantly, have a blast while doing it.
