Master the Art of Volleyball Blocking
Blocking is more than just jumping; it is about reading the setter and shutting down the hitter. Learn the footwork, timing, and defensive discipline to become a wall at the net.
Blocking is about timing and teamwork. In this partner drill, players mirror each other's movements at the net to improve their coordination and create a solid wall against attackers.
This is a combined block drill where multiple players work together to form a solid block. Team blocking is crucial for stopping strong hitters.
Here I am working with an athlete on her single block training. We focus on the details of hand position and penetrating the net to take away space from the hitter.
This video demonstrates the cross step blocking technique. This footwork pattern allows blockers to move quickly along the net to get in front of any attacker.
A single block workout session where players practice their jump and movement along the net. Repetition is key to making these movements fast and efficient.
More single block practice. We focus on everything from the starting position to the landing, ensuring the entire movement is safe and effective.
This is a single block drill on our outdoor court. Players work on their timing and form, learning to read the setter and get in position to make the block.
About this collection
The most common mistake I see isn't the jump, it's the footwork before you even leave the ground. Whether you are using a cross step or a shuffle, your movement needs to be explosive and precise to close the gap against an attacker. If you practice here, your game will definitely improve (illi practice madidre, nimma game pakka improve aguthe) because we focus on the repetition that builds muscle memory.
At Namma Bengaluru Torpedoes, we don't just teach you to put your hands over the net. We teach you to read the game.
Why Blocking Matters
Blocking is your first line of defense. A great block doesn't just stop the ball; it disrupts the opposing team's rhythm and gives your defense an easier ball to handle. In our sessions, we break this down into three key phases:
- Reading the Setter: Before you move, you watch. We train your eyes to track the ball from the pass to the setter's hands, so you know exactly where the attack is going.
- The Footwork: We drill the cross step relentlessly. It is the fastest way to get across the net, but it requires practice to get the timing right. You will do it until it becomes second nature.
- The Penetration: Once you are in the air, your hands need to be over the net. We focus on 'reaching and pressing' to take space away from the hitter, not just blocking straight up.
Our Approach
We run these drills on our indoor wooden courts at the Padukone-Dravid Centre in Yelahanka. The surface matters for safe, high-intensity landings. We also work on partner blocking, where communication is key. You learn to trust the person next to you, forming a single, solid wall.
This isn't about being perfect on day one. It is about work in progress. We keep our coaching ratio to 1:15, so you get the direct feedback you need to fix your form. Whether you are struggling with timing your jump or getting your hand placement right, we are here to push you until you get it right. No excuses. Just hard work.
