Great climbs do not just appear. We spend our weekends scrubbing granite, installing safety bolts, and scouting new lines to expand the outdoor climbing infrastructure around Bangalore.

The hard work behind the send. Here, a team member is equipped for route development, a process that involves cleaning the rock and installing permanent safety anchors to create new climbs for the community.

Unlocking Gaali Kallu. This post breaks down the economics of creating new crags, from the cost of bolts and fuel to the invaluable energy fatores of our volunteers. We added nine new routes here over three weekends.

Announcing a new 5.10 sport route at Twin Towers, Yedumadu. This crag is perfect for a quick session, with shade all day and a variety of bolted lines just a five-minute walk from the car.

A highlight of the Gaali Kallu area, home to our new route development. This spire offers adventurous, old-school climbing and requires a 70-meter rope to rappel off the top.

Highlighting the Rasta Cafe routes at Mayaganahalli Betta. This area features short, technical, and intense climbs. We recently upgraded the old bolts to new stainless steel hardware to ensure long-term safety.

About Building Our Playground: Route Development

Developing a route is a serious commitment that goes beyond just the physical effort of scrubbing lichen and hauling gear to crags like Yedumadu or Gethna. We invest significant time and funds into high-quality stainless steel hardware to ensure long-term safety for the whole community. When you climb one of our lines, you are climbing on hardware we have hand-picked, installed, and rigorously tested ourselves.

More Than Just a Climb

Creating a new climbing route is a slow, methodical process that starts with finding the right rock face. Once we scout a line, the real work begins. We clean the face of loose rock and vegetation, often spending entire weekends in the sun just to prep a single section. It is grunt work, but it is necessary to make the rock safe and enjoyable.

Quality and Safety First

Bolting is the heart of our development work. We use certified stainless steel hardware (SS304 or Hilti expansion bolts) to replace old, rusting anchors. This ensures that every climber, from someone on their first outdoor top-rope to an experienced lead climber, is safe. We document our routes, sharing beta and location details on platforms like Crag so the community can enjoy these new playgrounds.

Our Playground

Whether it is the technical faces of Mayaganahalli Betta, the multi-pitch challenges at Talai Betta, or the beginner-friendly Gethna area, our goal is to build a diverse range of grades. Our playground is constantly evolving. If you want to understand what goes into a climb before you pull on the first hold, come join us for a session. It is the best way to gain respect for the rock and the community that keeps it climbable.
