Expert Shih Tzu Grooming and Coat Maintenance
Whether it is a puppy’s first cut or maintaining that floor-length show coat, I make sure your Shih Tzu leaves my Jalahalli studio looking clean and feeling comfortable.
A puppy's first groom is a big deal. I make sure it's a calm and positive experience. This video shows me giving a Shih Tzu puppy a gentle trim, using scissors for precise shaping around the body and tail. My goal is to make them comfortable with grooming for life.
Achieving and maintaining a floor-length show coat on a Shih Tzu takes serious dedication and skill. This is the result of careful, consistent grooming, brushing, and conditioning. Look at the perfect parting and the silky, healthy texture of the hair. This is my specialty.
Here is a look at some of the many Shih Tzus I work with. You can see the variety of coat colors and styles, from solid black and white to chocolate and tri-color. Each one is a part of the As Pet House family, and it shows the trust people have in my work.
This is another example of a perfectly maintained long coat. Notice how the brown and white hair flows without a single tangle. This level of coat care prevents matting and keeps the dog's skin healthy. It requires patience and the right techniques, which I have perfected over the years.
About Shih Tzu Specialist
Most owners struggle with Shih Tzu maintenance, specifically the matting that happens hidden near the skin. I don't just shave it off; I use careful line brushing and detangling techniques to save the length. If your pup is getting their first haircut, I focus on positive reinforcement, ensuring they stay calm and don't develop a fear of the scissors.
Grooming for the Shih Tzu Coat
Shih Tzus have a double coat that requires specific attention. Without regular maintenance, the undercoat mats easily. In my Jalahalli studio, I focus on:
- Line Brushing: This is the most important part of long-coat care. I work through the coat section by section, getting down to the skin to remove knots before they turn into painful mats.
- Safe Trimming: When a coat is beyond saving, I don't just reach for the clippers immediately. I try to detangle first. If a cut is necessary, I use professional-grade scissors around the face and paws to ensure a rounded, soft look rather than a jagged finish.
The First Haircut Experience
A puppy's first groom sets the tone for their life. I keep these sessions short and sweet. I avoid loud, scary dryers and sudden movements. The goal isn't just to make them look good today—it's to make sure they are happy to come back to the table next time.
Creative Finishing Touches
If you want something different, I offer safe, non-toxic hair coloring for ears or tails. This is perfect for owners who want to show off their pet's personality. Every session ends with a standard hygiene check—nail clipping, ear cleaning, and a tick check—because a pretty coat doesn't matter if the dog isn't healthy. If you have a specific style in mind, like a traditional puppy cut or a full show-ready look, just let me know before we start.
