Starting a new commission is always an exciting moment. Here, I am unrolling a massive canvas to begin work on a complex piece depicting the ancient art of Ayurvedic healing.
The initial layers of paint on a new figure. I start by blocking in the basic colors and shapes, slowly building up the tones and details that will give the character form and life.
This video shows my process for painting realistic skin tones. I blend various shades to create the subtle contours of the human form, bringing warmth and dimension to the figure.

This part of the process focuses on some of the key elements, including the anatomical skeleton and a female figure studying. It shows the blend of science and learning in Ayurveda.
Here, the focus is on the central figure of the Vaidya, or ancient doctor. Capturing his look of intense concentration was crucial to conveying the gravity and skill of his work.

About Ayurveda Series: The Art of Healing
These aren't standard decor pieces, they are 6x7 foot canvases requiring weeks of research and precise anatomical layering. Because of their massive scale, I ship these rolled securely in heavy-duty PVC pipes, meaning you will need to arrange for a local carpenter to stretch and frame them once they arrive.
My approach to these Ayurveda murals goes beyond just painting. I start with deep research into ancient texts to ensure the details, from the surgical instruments to the attire of the Vaidya, are historically accurate. For my large-scale institutional commissions, I provide a virtual mockup first so you can see exactly how the scene will sit on your wall.
The Commission Process
- Concepting: We begin with your specific requirements. Whether it's for a clinic, a hospital reception, or a personal home study, I adapt the composition to the space.
- Production: I use heavy-duty 10-12 oz cotton primed canvas. Building the image takes time, from the initial sketch to the final varnish that protects against humidity and fading.
- Updates: Throughout the 4-6 week creation period, I keep you updated with photos, so you see your vision taking shape before I finalize the details.
