Modern Staircase and Indoor Courtyard Designs
I design staircases and courtyards that serve as architectural focal points. By integrating nature and light, I create spaces that connect different levels of your home while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.

About Staircases & Indoor Courtyards
When planning a floating staircase or an indoor courtyard, the structural groundwork is the priority. I map out load-bearing requirements, riser heights, and drainage points in the 3D model before we begin construction, ensuring the greenery beneath your stairs has proper light and water management without causing structural dampness.
Architectural Functionality
My approach to staircases goes beyond the basic necessity of moving between levels. Whether it is a floating wooden flight, a grand marble staircase, or a space-saving metal design, the goal is to enhance the flow of the home. I treat these structures as part of the interior's architecture, often using perforated metal, glass, or steel cables to keep the sightlines open and the space feeling airy.
The Biophilic Connection
An indoor courtyard or 'nadumuttam' is a staple of Kerala architecture that I modernize for contemporary homes. By placing planters and water features directly under or adjacent to staircases, I bring nature into the center of the house. This design choice is not just visual; it regulates indoor airflow and light penetration.
My Design Process
Before construction starts, we use 3D visualization to lock in the details. You will see how the stair treads interact with the flooring, how the light hits the indoor garden at different times of the day, and where we need to place electrical points for feature lighting. This prevents surprises later.
We focus on:
- Material Honesty: Exposed brick, solid wood, and stone rather than artificial laminates.
- Lighting: Strategic cove lighting and architectural tracks to highlight textures.
- Space Efficiency: Compact layouts that do not sacrifice aesthetics.
Whether you are building in Kannur, Kochi, or Bangalore, I ensure these features align with the specific site conditions and your lifestyle requirements.
