• The Child's Preference: If your child is older, usually above 9, their wishes are heard, though they do not strictly dictate the final order.
• Red Flags: Any history of abuse, neglect, or addiction is a massive disqualifier. Do not assume that mothers automatically get custody. If there is proof of neglect, fathers can and do secure custody.
