Birdwatching Tours: Exploring India's Rare Species and Rituals
Birds are messengers in our stories and part of our cultural heritage. Join me to look beyond the surface and document the true behaviour of our wild avian life.
The peacock, our national bird, performs its mesmerizing dance as the monsoon season comes to a close. This sight, captured in the heart of Delhi, shows how nature thrives even in our busiest cities if we give it a chance.
The critically endangered Bengal Florican, a rare gem native to the Indian subcontinent. Spotting this bird in the grasslands of Manas Tiger Reserve is a special experience, highlighting the unique biodiversity of Northeast India.
The courtship of the Oriental Pied Hornbill, a fascinating ritual to observe. The male presents gifts to the female before she seals herself in a tree cavity to nest, a behavior I was fortunate to document in Rajaji National Park.
A beautiful Silver-breasted Broadbill perched in the dense forests of Manas. The Northeast is a paradise for bird lovers, offering chances to see species that are found nowhere else in the country.
A pair of Yellow-wattled Lapwings, known for their unique courtship displays. These ground birds are losing their habitat, and seeing them is a reminder of the delicate balance in our ecosystems.
A peacock displays its full train, a behaviour that is a true spectacle of nature. In our stories, the peacock's feathers are associated with Lord Krishna, and its dance is a celebration of life and rain.
About Birdwatching: Feathers and Festivals
Most people see a bird and move on, but I teach you how to predict their next move. Whether it is observing the courtship of the Oriental Pied Hornbill or documenting the Bengal Florican in Manas, we focus on the 'why' and 'how' of their behaviour. You will learn to use alarm calls and habitat cues to find species that others often miss in the rush of a standard safari.
My approach to birding is rooted in patience and understanding our connection to the land. I do not just take you to a park. I take you into the habitat where we can observe life unfold.
Why My Expeditions Are Different
We go to places like Manas for the Bengal Florican or Rajaji for Hornbills, not just for the checklist. I focus on small, intimate groups because silence is our best tool. We spend time on the ground, studying nesting rituals, and discussing how these creatures feature in our folklore—from the Neelkanth to our national bird, the peacock.
What We Cover
- Photography & Ethics: You will learn about lighting, composition, and most importantly, how to approach wildlife without disturbing their natural patterns.
- Behavioral Documentation: I share what I have learned over two decades about animal psychology—why a bird chooses a specific nesting site or how a species reacts to changing seasons.
- Cultural Context: We discuss the intersection of nature and our festivals, helping you see these animals as symbols that have been part of our culture for centuries.
Whether you are a serious photographer or someone who wants to reconnect with the wild, my tours offer a chance to slow down and really see. Shubh Yatra (have a blessed journey) as we explore these sacred spaces together.
