Color Splash Portraits: Artistic Selective Color Photography
I use selective color editing to turn monochrome portraits into bold, artistic statements. By stripping back the background, I make your chosen color—or a single object—the undeniable star of the frame.
A classic color splash edit. The entire image is in black and white except for the model's red hair, lips, and the rose. This technique creates a powerful, high-contrast visual that is both romantic and artistic.
A close-up portrait using the selective color technique. By isolating the red in her hair, lips, and the rose, the image gains a dramatic and focused intensity against the monochrome background.
Applying the color splash effect to our playful orange series. Only the orange slice remains in color, creating a surprising and eye-catching focal point in this black and white portrait.
Another example of the selective color technique, this time with the model holding an orange slice over her eye. The pop of yellow against the grayscale image creates a fun, graphic effect.
A playful color splash edit where only the two orange slices are in color. This turns a fun portrait into a piece of pop art, emphasizing the quirky and creative nature of the shoot.
An identical copy of the red rose color splash portrait. This editing style is one of my signatures for creating moody and conceptual images.
A different pose from the 'Only Red' series, again using the color splash effect. The technique highlights the model's expression and the single red rose she holds.
A duplicate of the close-up color splash portrait. This style is particularly effective for drawing attention to specific details and creating a strong emotional mood.
Another copy of the intense color splash portrait. The stark contrast between the monochrome and the single pop of red creates a visually arresting image.
A repeat of the orange slice color splash. This technique demonstrates how a simple editing choice can completely transform the feel of a photograph.
About Color Splash Portraits
Getting the 'Color Splash' look is more than just desaturating a photo. I work with you to pick a prop or outfit, like a red rose, a slice of citrus, or a specific accessory, that becomes the focal point. During the shoot, we focus on high-contrast lighting to ensure the subject pops even before I apply the digital selective color grade.
This style of photography relies on minimalism. By converting the surroundings to black and white, I remove distractions, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the subject, their expression, and that one vibrant element. Whether it is a deep crimson lip, a yellow lemon, or a contrasting scarf, the color is not just an edit; it is a narrative device.
Planning is key for these sessions. If you want this look, we should decide on the 'splash' element before the shoot. A vibrant yellow prop against a grayscale city street or an indoor studio setting creates a graphic, almost pop-art aesthetic that stands out on any feed.
I typically shoot these sessions in controlled lighting to maximize texture. After the shoot, my editing process involves precise masking to ensure the color bleed is kept to an absolute minimum, maintaining the sharpest possible contrast. If you are looking for a moody profile picture or an artistic addition to your portfolio, these images deliver a clean, striking visual impact without the noise of a busy background.
