About The Bougainvillea Collection: A Riot of Colour

My Bougainvillea bonsai need at least six hours of direct sunlight to bloom this profusely, so please do not keep them indoors. These are true sun-worshippers that will turn your terrace into a vibrant, living canvas.

The 'Bogan' is my favourite choice for any Bangalore home with a sunny spot. These trees are not just plants; they are resilient characters that adapt beautifully to the city's climate. When you bring one home, you are not just getting a pot and a tree, you are taking home a piece of my terrace garden that has been pruned and shaped over months or years.

Why Bougainvillea?

Unlike many other species, these are hardy and drought-tolerant once established. They do not demand constant attention, but they do require commitment to light. If you place them in a shaded corner, they will grow leaves but refuse to flower. Give them the sun they crave, and they will reward you with constant magenta, pink, or orange bursts of colour.

Care Basics

I provide a cheat sheet with every tree, but here is the reality: keep the soil well-draining. I use a specific mix that allows water to pass through quickly, preventing the roots from sitting in wet mud, which is the only real enemy of these plants. Pruning is also part of the dance. After a flush of blooms fades, trimming the branches back encourages the tree to push out new growth and even more flowers in the next cycle.

My Approach to Styling

I shape these using structural wiring, but I always let the tree guide me. Some want to cascade, others want to stand upright. I respect the tree's natural tendency while maintaining the balance of a miniature landscape. Whether you are looking for a small 'Bogan' for a side table or a larger, 10-year-old specimen with a thick trunk for your balcony, I have a tree that is ready for its new home.

I nurture these trees right here on my Sarjapur terrace, where the Bangalore sun does half the work. I believe that if you can give them enough light, they will give you a lifetime of colour.
