Mastering the Perfect Fit: A Guide to Custom Tailoring
We move beyond standard sizing to create garments that respect your posture and individual style. Explore the technical details that separate a well-made shirt from the rest.
This is the core philosophy of our craft. We don't chase standard sizes; we pursue the perfect fit that is unique to your body, posture, and style. A bespoke garment is a celebration of individuality.
How snug should a shirt collar be? In this episode of 'The Cutting Room', Ujjwal demonstrates the "two-finger rule" for achieving a collar that is comfortable and looks sharp, without being too tight or too loose.
A simple visual guide to test your shirt's collar fit. This infographic illustrates the difference between a collar that is too tight, too loose, and just right, helping you identify a key element of a well-fitting shirt.
In this segment, we explain the importance of the chest and yoke fit. A well-tailored shirt should allow for a full range of motion without straining at the back or showing wrinkles across the chest, ensuring both comfort and a clean silhouette.
We discuss the nuances of a perfectly fitted shirt sleeve. The sleeve should have enough room for movement while tapering cleanly towards the cuff, avoiding excess fabric for a modern and streamlined look.
What is the ideal shirt sleeve length? Ujjwal explains that a good sleeve should hit the wrist bone and have just enough length to not ride up when you move your arms, creating a polished and professional appearance.
Your collar frames your face, so why compromise on its style? We offer a wide range of bespoke collar options to ensure your shirt is not just a garment, but a statement of personal style.

About The Cutting Room: Mastering the Perfect Fit
Most off-the-rack shirts fail at the collar or the yoke, leading to fabric pulling or an awkward neckline. When we draft your individual paper pattern, we do not just measure your neck; we look at your posture and the slope of your shoulders. That is why our collars do not just sit; they frame your face. If you can slide two fingers into your collar and rotate comfortably, but it still feels crisp, you have found the right fit.
Fit is not about finding a size that is close enough. It is about how the fabric interacts with your body while you are in motion.
The Anatomy of a Shirt
- Collar Construction: Your collar frames your face. Whether you prefer a cutaway for a modern look or a classic spread, the internal stiffening must be firm enough to stay upright but soft enough to remain comfortable. We use different fusing techniques based on the fabric weight.
- Sleeve Tapering: A common mistake in mass-produced clothing is excess fabric at the forearm. We ensure the sleeve follows the line of your arm, providing room to move your bicep without ballooning at the wrist.
- The Yoke and Chest: This is where movement happens. A split yoke allows for natural stretching across your back, and we adjust this based on whether you have a forward or upright shoulder posture. If you feel strain when reaching forward, your yoke is likely too narrow.
Why Kulti Matters
For our jackets, we use an internal pad-stitching technique called Kulti. It connects the outer fabric to the internal horsehair canvas. This creates a graceful roll on the lapel and allows the jacket to mold to your chest over time. It is not something you see from the outside, but it is exactly what gives a garment longevity and structure.
Our Process
We do not use block alterations. We start with paper patterns drafted for your specific measurements, including corrections for drop shoulders or stooping posture. Our consultations are designed to be a masterclass, not a sales pitch. We want you to understand exactly what goes into your clothing so you can make informed choices.
Threadsmith
At Threadsmith, we believe your clothes should tell your story, not just cover you. We are Ujjwal and Ritika, and our Parel studio is a space for coffee, music, and honest conversations about fabric and form. We do not do standard sizes; we construct garments that move with you, built from the ground up.
