Behind the scenes of my creative process
Painting isn't just about the final wall. It's the sketches, the coffee breaks, the travel, and the mess in between. Here is a look at how I turn a blank space into something real.
A typical day in my studio, juggling between sketching new ideas on my tablet and working on physical pieces. Balancing creativity with documenting the process is a key part of my work.
The start of a residential staircase mural. This is the first step, where I lay down the base colours that will become the sky and sand for a beautiful beach scene.
My tools of the trade. This black and white photo shows the beautiful mess of my paintbrushes after a productive session. Each one has helped tell a story on a wall somewhere.
My favourite combination: 'Pahad and chai', or in this case, mountains and my paintbrushes. Taking inspiration from the incredible scenery during my work trip to Wayanad.
About The Creative Process
Every mural starts with a digital mockup before I even touch the wall. I spend time sketching on my tablet while we chat about your ideas, so you know exactly what the outcome looks like before I grab my brushes. It keeps the process stress-free and ensures the final art feels like your story, not just a random design.
The creative process isn't just about the final brushstroke. It’s the organised chaos of my studio, juggling tablet sketches, paint-stained brushes, and coffee mugs. My approach is pretty simple: we chat, I sketch, and then I paint.
Before any mural starts, I create 1-2 digital mockups. I superimpose the design on a photo of your actual wall, so you get a clear picture of the scale and colour scheme before we commit. Whether it’s an indoor graphic feature wall or a large exterior piece, I handle the surface prep and priming. For indoors, I use premium emulsions that are safe and long-lasting. For outdoor spaces or commercial areas, I switch to weather-proof paints to handle the Mumbai humidity or the Kerala rains.
Being an artist means balancing the actual work with the documentation side of things, which I admit, I’m still learning. Sometimes the best ideas happen on the road, like when I spontaneously picked up brushes during a trip to Wayanad. If you have an empty wall in your home, cafe, or office that needs a story, let's talk. I travel for projects, so distance isn't a dealbreaker.
The Mood Box
Hi, I'm Amolika. I spent years fixing teeth, but these days, I'm much happier fixing blank walls with a splash of colour. I love the chaos of creation, whether I'm at my Mumbai studio or painting a mural on a whim during a trip to Wayanad.
