Preparing Your Dog for a New Baby

Bringing a baby home is a huge transition for your dog. I help you bridge the gap before the big day, focusing on practical cues and household management so you can spend less time stressing and more time enjoying your new family dynamic.

Before your baby arrives, we need to polish a few key cues. "Leave it" for dropped baby toys, "Drop" for when they pick something up, and solid "Place" and "Stay" commands will be lifesavers when your hands are full.

When should you start preparing your dog for a baby? The sooner, the better. I recommend starting the planning in the first trimester so that by the second, we are actively training and setting up your dog for a smooth, easy transition.

The biggest mistake I see parents make is rushing the introduction between their dog and baby, hoping for an instant bond. It's a huge change for a dog, and giving them space and choice is the safest and kindest approach.

One of my biggest dreams when I was pregnant was taking my baby and dog on walks together. This became a reality because I focused on two things: leash training so my dog wouldn't pull, and finding the right baby carrier for hands-free management.

About this collection

Most people wait until they are home from the hospital to introduce the baby, but that is the riskiest time to start. I work with you to practice stroller drills and solidify reliable 'place' and 'leave it' cues weeks before your due date. This turns your dog's potential anxiety into a predictable routine, so you are not trying to teach basic obedience while navigating the exhaustion of those first few newborn weeks.

Why Preparation is Non-Negotiable

Raising kids and dogs together is messy, and honestly, it is bloody hard. The biggest myth I see? That your dog will automatically know how to 'bond' with a newborn. The truth is, your dog needs a roadmap. If you don't provide structure, they make up their own rules, which usually leads to unwanted behaviors like resource guarding or excessive barking.

The Essentials of a Safe Home

We need to shift your home environment before the baby arrives. This isn't just about training; it is about management:

  • Stroller Drills: We practice walking with an empty stroller to desensitize your dog to the noise and movement. If your dog pulls on the leash, we fix that now.
  • Safe Zones: Your dog must have a retreat space where the baby cannot follow. We audit your home layout to place baby gates and crates where your dog can genuinely switch off.
  • Cues for Chaos: When your hands are full of nappies, you need your dog to listen. We proof 'Leave it' for dropped items and 'Place' so they understand exactly where to go when things get hectic.

Which Option Fits You?

  • Group Webinar: A 2-hour deep dive on Zoom covering pre-arrival checklists and immediate post-birth management. Perfect for families wanting the foundational knowledge.
  • 1-on-1 Consult: We jump on a video call to audit your specific home layout and assess your dog's current triggers.
  • In-Home Program (Bengaluru): A 5-session package where I come to you. We do the hands-on work with strollers, sound desensitization, and physical safety auditing in your own space.

There are no quick fixes, but with patience and the right setup, you can make this work for everyone.
