About High-Speed Automotive Shoots
Getting that perfect chase shot isn't just about speed, it's about precise control. When I'm tracking a vehicle at 100kmph, I use custom-built 5-inch freestyle drones with prop guards to get inches away from the car, capturing dynamic angles that traditional cameras just cannot reach.
Whether it is an automotive commercial or a personal project, the approach remains the same. High speed, low drag, and zero margin for error. My setup for these shoots involves custom 5-inch freestyle drones or Cinewhoops, depending on the environment. For open highways or race tracks like the Buddh International Circuit, I push the FPV speed. For tighter, complex shots, I switch to Cinewhoops with protective guards to fly safely around vehicles.
Every shoot involves a two-person crew. One pilot on the sticks and one visual observer watching the airspace. We record using GoPro Hero 11 or 12 Black, giving us 5.3K footage that we stabilize using ReelSteady. This keeps the car movement looking smooth even when the drone is diving at 100kmph. Safety is the foundation. Every flight is assessed through the Digital Sky platform and kept within Visual Line of Sight. I am DGCA certified, so you do not have to worry about the legality of the shoot. You handle the car and the talent, I handle the flight.
