Foundation Course: Design & Garment Construction
Core Technical Skills
- Pattern Making: Creating paper patterns for standard Indian sizes (S, M, L) and drafting for Kurtis, Salwars, Kameez, and basic Skirts.
- Garment Construction: Sewing techniques covering hems, seams, and finishing. Students stitch 10-15 complete garment prototypes.
- Illustration: Basic sketching techniques and croquis drawing to visualize designs before production.
Studio Exposure
- Live Observation: Access to the studio workfloor to observe the workflow from design to production.
- Fabric Guidance: Instruction on selecting appropriate fabrics for specific cuts (cotton, lining, basic silks).
- Certification: Sumaya Fashion Academy completion certificate valid for local industry jobs.
Advanced Diploma: Boutique Management & Bridal Couture
Advanced Craftsmanship
- Bridal Techniques: Advanced pattern making for bridal blouses (Prince cut, Katori cut) and Lehengas with can-can attachment.
- Heritage Arts: Hands-on training in Aari/Maggam work using wooden frames and Tanjore painting techniques on fabric.
Business & Operations
- Sourcing Field Trips: Guided visits to wholesale markets for fabric identification and negotiation. Includes access to a curated list of reliable vendors.
- Financial Strategy: Classroom sessions on costing sheets, calculating labor hours, and determining profit margins.
- Management: Training on inventory management, dead stock prevention, and bilingual client handling.
Professional Development

- Fabric sourcing isn’t a boring classroom thing. We step out to the stores together, finding materials, learning fabric sourcing strategies, and yes – bargaining for prices like a pro.
- I’ll teach you the basics of boutique startup guidance: how to price your work, manage your space, and keep things running. Swalpa theory, but mostly practical.

Hey, we’re Sumaya Designer Studio, but honestly, it feels more like a big family than a business. Nothing beats seeing a bride or her whole clan in our Kanchi silk creations—makes us feel part of their celebration. That’s why we started Sumaya Fashion Academy too, to pass on real-life boutique lessons, not just design. What really matters? The trust, the ‘akka’ (elder sister) calls, and clients who stick with us for every big moment. Jayanagar’s home, but our family’s all over the map.
