Sacred Pilgrimages of India: Cinematic Drone Videography
From the massive sea of devotees at the Mahakumbh to the quiet majesty of Adiyogi, I use cinematic and FPV drones to capture the scale of India's spiritual gatherings.
This is the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, the largest human gathering on the planet. Capturing this event from the air shows the sheer scale of devotion, with millions of people creating a sight that is impossible to grasp from the ground.
A drone show over the Mahakumbh, one of the largest human congregations in the world. This event, held every 12 years, is a spiritual gathering of millions, and my aerial shots document its historic scale.
On Mauni Amavasya at Mahakumbh 2025, nearly 9 crore devotees took a holy dip in 24 hours. My drone footage from that night shows the endless sea of people and lights, a testament to the incredible faith on display.
A compilation of Shiva temples I have captured with my drone for Mahashivratri. This video showcases my work across India, from Murudeshwara in Karnataka to the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, highlighting my experience in filming sacred sites.
Har Har Mahadev. A video of the Adiyogi statue at Isha Foundation, Chikkaballapura, near Bangalore. I captured this from various angles, showing the magnificent statue set against the backdrop of the surrounding hills.
Filming the Adiyogi statue during the Naag Panchami event at Isha Foundation. I used my Avata 2 FPV drone to get these dynamic shots, capturing the devotees and the grand scale of the celebration.
A close-up, artistic FPV drone shot of the Adiyogi statue during Mahashivratri. This perspective gives a powerful and intimate view of the statue, conveying a sense of peace and divinity.
About this collection
Filming at sacred sites requires more than just a good drone. It demands strict compliance with safety regulations and the ability to maneuver around traditional architecture without disruption. When I film large pilgrimages, I coordinate with organizers to capture the sheer magnitude of the gathering, like the river of people at Mahakumbh, without ever interfering with the devotees' experience.
Capturing spiritual gatherings is a unique challenge. You are not just filming a crowd; you are documenting faith, scale, and emotion from an angle that people on the ground rarely see. My workflow for these projects is built around two things: safety and perspective.
For massive events like the Mahakumbh Mela, I rely on the DJI Mavic 3 Pro. Its high-resolution sensor lets me document the endless sea of devotees in 5.1K, creating crisp, wide establishing shots that show the true size of the congregation. When I need to get closer to the action, like flying near temple structures, I switch to the DJI Avata 2. Its FPV capabilities allow for dynamic, immersive fly-throughs that ground the viewer in the energy of the moment.
Safety is non-negotiable. As a DGCA certified pilot, I understand the airspace restrictions around religious sites and high-density zones. Every flight starts with a site risk assessment. I work with an assistant to manage takeoff zones, ensuring that my equipment remains a distant observer rather than a distraction.
Whether you need aerial coverage for a temple festival in Karnataka or a nationwide pilgrimage event, my goal remains the same: to deliver raw, cinematic footage that does justice to the atmosphere. I provide high-resolution stills for your records and fully graded, high-energy highlight reels ready for social media.
Srihari Karanth
I am Srihari. I look for stories hidden in the sky, whether it is the massive energy of a pilgrimage or the quiet peace of a temple at sunrise. I am a DGCA certified pilot, so while I love getting those close-up, dynamic FPV shots, I always keep safety and respect for the location at the top of my list.
