Integrating Art into Interior Design for Unique Home Spaces
Art should not feel like an afterthought. When I design a space, I look for the narrative arc of the room, ensuring every painting or sketch finds its natural home within your walls.
An office space I designed, featuring a gallery wall of framed sketches and prints. The right collection of art can add immense character and personality to a professional environment.
A gallery wall I designed for a client's residence, installed along the staircase. This turns a simple transitional space into a point of interest, telling a visual story as you move through the home.
This video introduces my architecture collective, SpAArC. It shows how my artistic approach and design philosophy are applied to buildings and interiors, creating spaces that are both functional and expressive.
About Art in Context
Most gallery walls fail because they compete with the room's geometry rather than complementing it. I often advise clients to lock in the sightlines—the specific angles where you view the wall as you walk through a hallway or sit in your living room—before hanging a single piece. Getting the scale right relative to your furniture is just as critical as the artwork itself.
When we treat a wall as a canvas, we look at the house as a whole. An interior is not just furniture, it is the dialogue between the structural elements and the art that lives on them. In our projects, like the staircase gallery wall or the home office we have designed, the goal is always balance.
Lighting is the first thing we assess. Natural light shifts throughout the day, and artificial light requires careful positioning to avoid glare on glass frames. We do not believe in cluttered grids. Instead, we use the architecture to dictate the flow. If you have high ceilings, we might play with vertical scale to draw the eye upward. If you have a transitional space, we use smaller, intimate pieces to slow down the movement through that area.
We also consider the medium. Oil paintings require different spacing and protection compared to charcoal sketches or framed prints. By understanding the weight, texture, and emotional intent of each piece, we ensure that your art enhances the architecture rather than just filling empty space. Whether you have a collection of family photos or specific art commissions, the key is to allow the room to breathe while letting the art establish its own presence.
