Art and Materiality in Interior Design
We do not just fill rooms. We curate experiences using honest, tactile materials and local art to ensure every corner of your home feels grounded and alive.
A study in sculptural lighting. This black and white photo highlights the different forms and textures of light fixtures in one of our projects, from folded paper-like shades to undulating wooden pendants, each adding a layer of artistry to the ceiling.
In this workspace, we used dramatic wall-mounted lights that cast starburst patterns, transforming a simple wall into a feature. The interplay of light and shadow is contrasted with the classic checkerboard floor and a rustic bamboo ceiling.
We often use light to define architectural lines. Here, integrated LED strips in the handrail guide the way up a minimalist staircase, creating a graphic and almost futuristic effect in the dark.
A close-up of the custom-designed, back-lit wall feature. The soft glow emphasizes the organic, layered forms and the texture of the fluted paneling below, creating a piece that is both architecture and art.
Detail of the textured wall and sculptural cube shelves from our urban balcony project. The earthy finish of the wall and the simple geometry of the niches create a tactile and visually interesting surface.
A closer view of the living room corner, where the bold brushstrokes and colors of the abstract painting are the clear hero. The minimal furniture and neutral wall color are intentionally chosen to let the artwork speak.
A detail shot of the custom dining chairs featured at a design event. The legs are adorned with hand-painted, lathe-turned wooden beads inspired by traditional Channapatna toys, showcasing our commitment to integrating local craft into contemporary design.
About this collection
True luxury often lies in the tactile details that you can touch and feel every day. From the specific warmth of a hand-polished stone floor to the way we integrate local craft into modern furniture, we focus on finishes that age beautifully rather than just looking good at handover. It is about choosing a material for how it feels under your hand or how it catches the evening light, creating a space that feels personal rather than staged.
Architecture is more than floor plans and square footage. It is a sensory experience. Our approach to materiality is rooted in our belief that a space should have a soul. We often start our design process by selecting a primary material, whether it is natural granite, rich timber, or a specific fabric, and building the room around it. This is why you will see us incorporating elements like red oxide flooring, reclaimed wood, or hand-painted details in our projects.
We treat lighting as a material too. Rather than generic ceiling grids, we use coves, floor lamps, and natural light to dictate the mood. This changes how you perceive a room, turning a functional area into a retreat. Whether we are working on a luxury villa in Bengaluru or restoring an ancestral home in Mangaluru, our aim is to ensure the finished space reflects the people who live in it.
We do not believe in temporary trends. We believe in curated art, bespoke furniture details, and surfaces that invite you to pause and appreciate the craft. When we collaborate with our clients, we look at how these textures will evolve over time, ensuring your home remains a reflection of your own story for years to come.
Gayathri & Namith Architects
We are Gayathri and Namith. We founded our studio because we believe spaces should have a heartbeat, not just a plan. When we are not on-site sketching, you will likely find us debating textures or heritage architecture, making sure every project feels deeply rooted yet refreshingly new.
