Dry and Rock Garden Design in Bangalore
We create sculptural, water-wise landscapes inspired by the rocky terrain around Bangalore. Our dry gardens offer year-round texture and beauty with minimal maintenance.
This video tour shows a gravel garden we designed. These landscapes are low maintenance but still offer incredible texture, form, and beauty.
Five months after planting, this dry rock garden at a client's entrance is settling in. The design provides year-round interest with minimal water needs.
This gravel mulch garden, planted in 2021, has grown in to completely cover the space. The plants form a cohesive community, shading the soil and supporting each other.
We create layers even in our dry gardens. Here, low-growing grasses, flowering Euphorbia, sculptural agaves, and tall palms create depth and visual interest.
A closer look at the plant combinations in a dry rock garden. We mix succulents like Adenium, architectural Cycads, and flowering groundcovers for a rich, textured look.
About this collection
A dry garden is not just about spreading gravel. It requires a precise balance of drainage and plant placement to prevent root rot in our climate. We install high-grade geotextile membranes and deep gravel layers to suppress weeds while allowing the soil to breathe. When we select your specimen plants, like Agaves or Euphorbias, we create sand-heavy planting pockets tailored to their specific root needs, ensuring they stay vibrant without needing constant watering.
Why Choose a Dry Garden?
For many Bangalore homes, a high-maintenance lawn is often not practical or sustainable. Our dry and rock garden designs are inspired by the rugged, rocky landscapes of regions like Nandi Hills. These spaces are built to be resilient, thriving on neglect while providing striking visual interest through textures, architectural forms, and negative space.
Our Technical Process
A successful rock garden relies on what lies beneath the surface. We do not simply place rocks on soil. Our process involves:
- Foundation: We install a high-grade geotextile membrane. This acts as a barrier to prevent weeds from growing through your decorative gravel while allowing water to pass through to the soil.
- Stone Work: We use 4 to 6 inches of gravel, river pebbles, or crushed granite chips. This depth is critical for moisture retention and weed suppression.
- Feature Boulders: We source local granite and gneiss rocks to mimic natural outcrops. These become the focal points of your garden, providing 'weight' and structure.
- Drainage: We incorporate sand-heavy planting pockets for each specimen plant to ensure roots never sit in water, a crucial step for preventing rot in dry-loving species.
Plant Selection for Dry Landscapes
We focus on 'architectural' plants that grow slowly and provide year-round interest. This includes hardy succulents like Agave attenuata, sculptural Cycads, and Euphorbias that add colour without the need for constant trimming. By mixing these with palms like Phoenix roebelenii, we create depth and height that feels balanced and natural. These gardens are meant to grow into themselves, looking better as the years pass.
