Festivals, Culture & Community: The Siksha Approach
At Siksha, festivals are more than holidays; they are opportunities to practice empathy, share traditions, and build a kind, inclusive community. We help children connect with the world through meaningful, hands-on cultural and wellness activities.
Children dressed as Radha and Krishna for our Janmashtami celebration. Celebrating festivals teaches children about different cultures and traditions in a joyful, immersive way, and these older students serve as role models for the younger ones.
For Ganesh Chaturthi, this student sculpted his own Ganesha idol from turmeric dough. These hands-on activities connect children to the spiritual and cultural significance of festivals.
On World Yoga Day, children practice the tree pose in our outdoor area. Yoga helps them develop balance, concentration, and a connection between their mind and body.
Children proudly display the lanterns they made to celebrate Ramadan. We learn about the importance of sharing and giving, and we create art that reflects the symbols of the festival.
Education is a partnership between the school and home. This collage shows parents engaged in the classroom, observing and participating in their child's learning journey, which strengthens our entire school community.
A wide view of our Janmashtami celebration, with children in colorful traditional dress. These community gatherings are filled with stories, songs, and shared food, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
Children sit together for a snack during our Janmashtami festival. Sharing food is an important part of any celebration and helps to build bonds of friendship and community.
Children listen intently to a story during our festival celebrations. Storytelling is a powerful way to pass on cultural knowledge and values from one generation to the next.
A group of boys in traditional kurtas hold up peacock feather crafts they made for Janmashtami. Art and craft activities are central to how we celebrate and learn about festivals.
Two of our elementary students pose beautifully in their festive attire for Janmashtami. They take pride in participating and sharing their culture with their peers.
About Celebrating Together: Culture, Community & Wellness
We don't just decorate the classroom for a festival; we treat it as a practical life lesson. When children prepare Janmashtami prasadam or craft lanterns for Ramadan, they aren't just following instructions. They are learning the significance of giving, sharing, and respecting different traditions. This hands-on approach transforms a festive day into a deep, empathetic connection with the world around them.
Why We Celebrate
In a Montessori environment, cultural celebrations are more than just breaks from the curriculum. They are pivotal moments for social and emotional development. By exploring global festivals, we encourage children to step outside their own experiences and appreciate the diversity of the world.
Learning Through Tradition
Festivals at Siksha are deeply practical:
- Cultural Literacy: Whether it is making clay Ganesha idols or designing Ramadan cards, we focus on the process. Children learn the history, symbols, and values behind each occasion.
- Social Responsibility: We extend our learning beyond the classroom. During Ramadan, for example, our students organize donations for Karunashraya, a local hospice. This teaches children that a community is built on caring for those who need it most.
- Grace and Courtesy: Shared meals, storytelling, and listening to others are fundamental to our festive gatherings. These interactions refine the children's ability to communicate, wait their turn, and practice kindness.
Mind and Body Wellness
Our community approach also includes a focus on physical and mental well-being, such as our Yoga Day activities. These sessions help children find stillness, balance, and a connection with their own bodies, skills that complement the structured focus of their daily Montessori work.
A Partnership of Values
We believe education is a shared journey. We frequently invite parents to observe and participate in these community days, strengthening the bond between home and school. When you see your child celebrating alongside their peers, you are seeing them build the confidence, empathy, and open-mindedness that define a Siksha education.
