Ayurvedic Treatments for Digital Eye Strain
Constant screen time leads to dryness, fatigue, and persistent eye strain. I use traditional therapies like Netra Tarpana and Bidalaka to soothe, nourish, and protect your vision naturally.
The first benefit of Netra Tarpana is improved vision. This therapy works by deeply nourishing and strengthening the eye tissues, which helps enhance visual clarity over time.
Netra Tarpana is particularly effective for relieving eye strain. The treatment soothes tired, overworked eyes, making it highly beneficial for those who spend long hours reading or on digital screens.
A primary function of Netra Tarpana is reducing dryness. The medicated ghee used in the therapy lubricates the eyes, relieving the itching and irritation caused by environmental factors and screen use.
Beyond strain, Netra Tarpana helps alleviate eye disorders. It can manage early-stage conditions like conjunctivitis and glaucoma by improving ocular circulation and reducing inflammation.
Regular Netra Tarpana sessions can delay age-related degeneration. The therapy supports eye longevity by nourishing optic nerves and reducing oxidative stress in the ocular tissues.
This graphic lists the benefits of Bidalaka, an Ayurvedic treatment where a herbal paste is applied around the eyes. It is effective for alleviating eye strain, reducing inflammation, and diminishing dark circles.
This post for Low Vision Awareness Month emphasizes the importance of proactive eye care. Ayurvedic practices are key to prevention and early intervention for maintaining long-term eye health.
About Ayurvedic Eye Care for the Digital Age
The first thing you will notice during a Netra Tarpana session is the dough barrier. We carefully construct a ring from herbal black gram flour around your eyes to create a reservoir. This allows us to fill the area with lukewarm, sterile medicated ghee. It is a quiet, precise process, and the cooling sensation is immediate. It feels very different from just putting in eye drops because the ghee stays in contact with your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes to deeply lubricate them.
Many patients walk into my clinic in AECS Layout, Marathahalli, with eyes that feel gritty and heavy from spending over ten hours a day on laptops and phones. In Ayurveda, we see this as an imbalance of Vata dosha, where the natural lubrication of the eyes is depleted by constant light exposure and mental fatigue.
My approach focuses on two main therapies to reverse this:
Netra Tarpana: This is our primary therapy for deep nourishment. We use high-quality, warmed medicated ghee, such as Triphala Ghrita, which is known for its ability to strengthen the optic nerves. You will perform gentle, guided blinking exercises while the eyes are submerged, which helps the medicinal properties absorb into the ocular tissues. A full session takes about 30 to 45 minutes, including the preparation and the dark-rest period afterward to manage light sensitivity.
Bidalaka: For days when you need a quicker intervention, or if you are dealing with significant inflammation, we use Bidalaka. This involves applying a customized herbal paste around the eye region. It is highly effective for reducing the puffiness and dark circles that often accompany chronic screen fatigue.
This is not a one-day fix. Every treatment starts with a quick assessment of your current eye health. I customize the herbal formulations to match your specific needs, whether you are dealing with early-stage conjunctivitis, dryness, or just the weight of digital eye strain. We are not just treating a symptom, we are helping your eyes regain their natural resilience against the demands of a modern lifestyle.
