Ghungroo Pooja: Starting Your Classical Dance Journey
The Ghungroo Pooja is not just a ceremony. It is the sacred moment a student formally earns the right to wear ghungroos and perform on stage. At our studio, this event marks the end of your initial basic training and the beginning of your performance journey.
A glimpse into the Ghungroo Pooja for my Kathak and Semiclassical students. This ceremony is where I, as their guru, tie the blessed ghungroos on their feet for the first time, marking their official entry into the world of performance.
The sacred setup for our Ghungroo Pooja ceremony. Every element, from the flowers and lamps to the idols of Lord Nataraja, is arranged to seek blessings for my students as they begin their formal dance journey.
The complete Ghungroo Pooja ceremony is filled with blessings, prayers, and emotion. You can see the priest conducting the rituals and the moment my students receive their ghungroos, a proud day for them, their parents, and me.
This video shows the Chilanga Pooja for four batches of our Bharatanatyam students. It's a significant event where they formally receive their anklets from their guru, Ahalya, and perform their first steps as initiated dancers.
About The Ghungroo Pooja: A Dancer's First Milestone
After completing your foundational modules in Kathak or Bharatanatyam, we host this ceremony with traditional rituals to bless your ghungroos. It signals that you are ready to move beyond basic steps like Tattukazhu or foundational footwork and begin focused choreography for stage performances. If you are curious about how long it takes to reach this milestone in your training, send me a message.
The Ghungroo Pooja, often called Chilanga or Salangai Pooja depending on the region, is a significant milestone for any classical dancer. It is the moment when a student transitions from a learner to a performer. In our studio, we believe this tradition provides a necessary psychological and spiritual foundation before a student steps onto the stage.
What happens during the ceremony?
We follow the traditional Lucknow Gharana approach for Kathak and standard practices for Bharatanatyam. The ceremony involves:
- Ritualistic Blessing: We invoke the blessings of Lord Nataraja to ensure the dancer's movements are graceful and accurate.
- Formal Acceptance: The ghungroos are tied on the student's feet by their guru, symbolizing the start of a serious commitment to the art form.
- First Performance: Students often perform their first basic routines, showcasing the footwork and rhythm they have mastered during their initial months of study.
Preparing for your Pooja
This ceremony is reserved for students who have successfully completed their basic theory and practice. Whether you are learning Kathak in our Electronic City studio or joining our online batches, the path involves rigorous training in mudras, taal, and laya. We do not rush this process. It is about building a connection with the dance, not just completing a course.
We welcome students of all ages. Whether you are a parent looking to introduce your child to Indian culture or an adult professional finding a creative outlet, the Ghungroo Pooja is an achievement that brings immense pride to our community. If you are ready to begin this journey, our upcoming batches are the perfect place to start.
