Intimate Courtyard & Zen Garden Designs
A quiet corner can change how you live. We transform overlooked spaces into peaceful sanctuaries, blending natural stone, layered foliage, and thoughtful lighting to give your home a true heart.
This central courtyard is designed as an open-to-sky sanctuary within the home. The use of gravel, stone pavers, and a mix of hanging and potted plants creates a multi-layered green space that connects different levels of the house.
A zen garden court we designed for a home in Ahmedabad. The composition uses gravel, river stones, lawn patches, and a specimen tree to create a space for contemplation and calm, with a curtain of cascading vines in the background.
We created this cozy seating nook in an entrance garden in South Mumbai. Surrounded by frangipani trees and lush foliage, it offers a quiet place to sit and enjoy a moment of peace before entering or leaving the home.
A beautiful lawn in a Juhu residence, framed by a sculptural fence and layered tropical planting. This space serves as a green heart for the property, providing a soft, open area for relaxation and play.
Even the space under a staircase can be a garden. We filled this built-in planter with a variety of indoor plants like monstera and money plant, bringing a touch of vibrant green to an often-overlooked area.
A sculpture is nestled amongst dense tropical foliage, creating a focal point in this garden corner. We often integrate art into our landscapes to add a personal and contemplative dimension.
A wet-weather view of a garden path leading past a vertical green wall. The combination of different textures, from the smooth, wet stone to the varied foliage, creates a rich sensory experience.
In this stone courtyard, we planted foxtail palms and other tropical plants in a central bed. The verticality of the palms contrasts beautifully with the horizontal lines of the arched colonnade.
A view from the colonnade into a lush garden. We designed this path to meander through a dense planting of palms and flowering shrubs, leading to a statue that acts as a destination and focal point.
A narrow side passage is transformed into a green corridor with the use of large corten steel planters. The lush planting creates a pleasant journey and screens the adjacent wall.
About Courtyards & Intimate Gardens
We focus on creating a micro-climate within your home. Whether it is a small light-well, a narrow side passage, or the space under a staircase, our approach involves using specific shade-loving species and porous materials like gravel or stone. This ensures your courtyard doesn't just look green, but actually stays cool and breathes, regardless of the urban density around it.
Designing the Heart of Your Home
We believe the smallest spaces often leave the biggest impact. An intimate courtyard or a Zen garden is not about filling space; it is about subtraction and focus. We look at your home’s architectural lines and see where nature can soften the concrete edges.
Our Technical Approach
- Micro-Climate Control: In a city like Mumbai, heat retention is a major factor. By using specific hardscaping like river stones or limestone pavers, combined with vertical green walls or cascading vines, we lower ambient temperatures.
- Material Selection: We rely on tactile materials—natural stone, corten steel planters, and gravel paths—to create a transition between the indoors and the exterior. These materials age gracefully, adding character as the garden matures.
- Layered Planting: A successful intimate garden relies on depth. We compose scenes using a multi-tier structure: ground covers for texture, mid-level shrubs for screening, and specimen trees to provide a focal point or a canopy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you work with existing structures? Yes. We specialize in retrofitting courtyards and garden nooks into finished homes. We assess the light, drainage, and structural load before proposing a design.
Is maintenance difficult? We design for the reality of your lifestyle. If you prefer low-intervention gardens, we use hardy, drought-tolerant species and automated irrigation systems that keep the space vibrant with minimal daily effort.
How does this integrate with the house? Our goal is to create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Whether it is a veranda connecting to a courtyard or a balcony that feels like a garden, we ensure the design feels like a natural extension of your living room.
