Adopting Senior Dogs: Giving Them a Second Chance
Every dog deserves a soft landing, especially our seniors who have spent years waiting for a real home. We share these stories to show the beauty of adopting an older dog.
This is Snowy on her gotcha day anniversary. We rescued this 9-year-old girl who was abandoned and battling multiple health issues. We gave her a year of love, comfort, and care, and though we lost her to cancer, we will cherish her memory forever. Adopting a senior is a gift.
A tribute to our senior girl, Snowy, who we adopted after she was rescued. She spent her last year as a cherished family member, not a forgotten stray. Adopting a senior dog was the best decision of our lives, and her memory inspires us to continue our work.
About this collection
Senior dogs come with histories, and sometimes health issues like spondylitis or liver values that need monitoring. We are completely transparent about these needs and provide you with all medical history and specific nutrition plans so you know exactly how to care for them from day one.
Our work with senior dogs is about more than just rescue. It is about honoring their resilience. Many of our rescues, like our dear Snowy, come to us with challenges like cataracts or past trauma. When you open your home to a senior, you are not just getting a pet. You are providing comfort to a soul that has often been forgotten.
Why Consider a Senior Dog
Unlike puppies, seniors often come with established personalities. They are typically house-trained, understand basic boundaries, and possess a calm temperament that fits well into a settled household. They do not have the chaotic energy of a puppy, and they are incredibly grateful for a safe, warm space.
Our Medical & Care Transparency
We believe you deserve full honesty when bringing a dog into your life. Every senior dog we rehome comes with:
- Medical Records: Full disclosure of vet reports, blood work, and surgical history.
- Transition Kits: We provide current medication supplies and specific health charts to manage conditions like seizures or mobility issues.
- Ongoing Support: You are never alone after the adoption. We offer expert guidance on nutrition, medication schedules, and emergency protocols specific to senior care.
The Reality of Fostering and Adopting
We follow a strict, no-cage policy. Dogs live indoors as family members. If you are worried about the commitment, start by fostering. It allows you to see if a senior fits your lifestyle without the immediate pressure of a permanent decision. We are here to walk you through the process, from screening to the final transition.
PL Paws
We are a group of volunteers, not a shelter. We operate entirely out of our own homes and the homes of our fosters because we believe every dog deserves to be part of a family, even while they wait for their forever home.
