The Hand-Painting Process

Step inside my Old Delhi studio to see how I transform blank surfaces into vibrant art using only traditional brushes and oil paints.

This video shows the very first step: drawing the design with chalk and then carefully outlining the letters in white paint. This forms the foundation for all the color and detail that follows.

About The Hand-Painting Process

Every piece of art you see here began as a simple chalk sketch on a blank surface. I do not use computers or digital printers for any part of my process. Once we finalize the sketch, I begin the layering of high-gloss oil enamel, which requires careful hand-application and drying time to ensure that 3D lettering and traditional motifs truly pop.

My process is rooted in the traditions of street art and commercial sign painting I have practiced for decades. It is a slow, intentional workflow that prioritizes texture and depth over the flat finish of digital media.

The Three Stages of My Process

  1. The Sketch: I always start with a free-hand chalk sketch directly on the surface—whether it is a wall, metal, or wood. This gives you a clear sense of the composition and lettering style before a single drop of paint touches the surface.

  2. The Base and Layering: I apply a high-gloss oil enamel base. For 3D lettering, I build up layers to create shadows and highlights, which creates the depth that is a signature of my style. This stage involves significant drying time, typically 2 to 3 days, depending on the weather conditions.

  3. The Detail: This is where the character comes in. I add the floral vines, traditional folk motifs, and multi-lingual scripts that define my work. I finish with a sealant to ensure the durability of the piece, especially for outdoor signs or truck art.

Why Hand-Painted Matters

Because I avoid digital tools, every sign or mural has unique brush texture and slight imperfections that machines cannot replicate. Whether you want a complex 3D nameplate, a piece of truck art, or a wall mural for your home or office, you are getting a finished work that is entirely one-of-a-kind. I work in Hindi, English, Urdu, and many other scripts, ensuring the typography is as expressive as the imagery itself.
