About Portraits for Everyone: Men, Women, & Couples

Drawing two people on one page is all about balance. When I sketch a couple, I focus on their connection first—maybe it is the contrast in their hairstyles or the way they are leaning toward each other—before I ever touch the details. You do not need an eraser to do this, you just need to commit to the line and keep your marker moving.

My Approach to Portraits

When I draw, I don’t start with the ears or the hair. I start with the expression. Whether it is an individual portrait or a couple, the face shape is your roadmap. For couples, the real challenge is making sure the two heads look like they belong on the same paper. I usually start with one character and then position the second one so they interact—maybe they are looking at each other or sharing a laugh.

Why Markers?

I stick to permanent markers because they force you to be confident. If you make a mistake, you just laugh it off and keep going. This method is perfect for beginners because it stops you from over-thinking. You learn to trust your hand, focus on the big shapes, and exaggerate the features that make a person unique—like a big smile, a distinct nose, or those trendy glasses.
