Watch the careful process as our plant whisperer, Lakshman, sets up a miniature world inside a large glass bottle. A challenging process with a small opening, but the result is a beautiful, self-sustaining sealed terrarium.
A glimpse into our workshop where we create customized terrariums. This video shows the making of both sealed terrariums with humidity-loving plants and open terrariums with a variety of succulents.

About this collection
Choosing between a sealed or open terrarium comes down to your space. If you want a self-sustaining ecosystem that thrives on humidity and never needs watering, go sealed. If you prefer the structure and drama of succulents or a string of pearls, we build open arrangements that just need a bright, sunny spot.
Building these ecosystems is as much about science as it is about aesthetics. Whether we are styling a small desk jar or a large carboy, we use a specific layering technique that makes the difference between a dying plant and a thriving, miniature world.
The Science Under the Glass
We start with a base of LECA clay balls for drainage, followed by activated charcoal to keep the air fresh and odor-free. We layer this with a specialized potting mix that we blend right here in our workshop. For our sealed (closed) terrariums, we select plants that love humidity—like Fittonias, nerve plants, and moss. Because these jars create their own internal water cycle, you can essentially set them and forget them.
Open vs. Sealed
For open terrariums, we shift our approach completely. Since these don't hold humidity, we use arid-loving plants like succulents, cacti, and String of Pearls. These are perfect for bright, well-lit living rooms where you want a structural piece that grabs attention without needing daily attention.
Why it Matters
We often use vintage glass or unique geometric vessels to hold these landscapes. It is not just about putting a plant in a jar. It is about how the roots interact with the moss, how the soil color contrasts with the river stones, and how the entire piece looks on your coffee table or office desk. If you want something specific—perhaps using a family heirloom vessel or a specific color palette to match your interiors—we are happy to build it to order.
