Cut through the viral myths. Get scientific, actionable facts about skin health and early detection from a board-certified dermatologist.

Actinic Keratosis is a pre-cancerous lesion caused by sun exposure. It feels like rough sandpaper and, if left untreated, can develop into skin cancer. Regular skin screenings and daily sunscreen are your best prevention.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is a slow-growing but dangerous skin cancer. Look for shiny bumps or sores that don't heal. The best prevention is daily sunscreen and staying in the shade during peak sun hours.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma is the most common skin cancer in India, often due to high sun exposure. Signs include a firm red lump or a scaly sore that won't heal. Protective clothing and SPF 30+ are crucial.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. I explain the ABCDEs to help you spot it: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variations, Diameter over 6mm, and Evolving over time. Regular self-checks are vital.

Bowen's Disease is an early warning sign for Squamous Cell Carcinoma. It often looks like a red, scaly patch and can be confused with eczema. Early treatment is key to preventing it from developing into cancer.

May is Melanoma Awareness Month. This guide shows you how to differentiate between a normal and an abnormal mole using the ABCDE method. Early detection can save your life.

Don't let anyone tell you that getting dark from playing in the sun is a bad thing. Tanning is your skin's natural protective mechanism. The melanin in our beautiful brown skin acts as a natural sunscreen, reducing our risk of skin cancer.

Did you know your skin completely renews itself every 28 days? As we age, this cycle slows down, which can lead to dullness and pigmentation. Understanding this process is key to effective anti-aging skincare.

A core principle of my practice is to target the cause of a skin condition, not just the symptom. Temporary fixes might offer brief relief, but they can do more harm than good in the long run. Always seek a proper diagnosis.

This is my review of the popular Beauty of Joseon Korean sunscreen. I break down its key ingredients like rice bran water and niacinamide, and explain why its lightweight, dewy finish makes it one of my favorite products.

About Skin Health & Awareness

A changing mole or a persistent scaly patch is not something to 'wait out.' When I see patients in my clinic, the biggest hurdle is usually the time lost waiting for a symptom to resolve on its own. If you have concerns about a mark on your body or think you have spotted an irregularity, early professional screening is the safest path forward.

The internet is flooded with skincare advice, but when it comes to potential skin cancers like Melanoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma, or Squamous Cell Carcinoma, guesswork is dangerous.

Why You Need a Professional Assessment

Many of my patients come in worried about a spot that has been there for months. By the time they arrive, the condition may have advanced. I use the ABCDE method to help you spot potential issues:

  • A (Asymmetry): One half of the spot does not match the other.
  • B (Border): The edges are ragged or blurred.
  • C (Color): There are variations in color, such as shades of brown, black, or red.
  • D (Diameter): The spot is larger than 6mm.
  • E (Evolving): The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.

Indian Skin and Sun Safety

There is a common misconception that Indian skin is immune to skin cancer due to higher melanin levels. While melanin acts as a natural sunscreen, it is not a shield. We are still susceptible to skin cancers, especially in areas with high sun exposure. This is why I maintain that sunscreen is non-negotiable—not just for anti-aging, but for health.

My Approach to Screening

At the Venkat Center (Vijayanagar, Banashankari, and Cunningham Road), I don't just look at the surface. I assess the medical history, evaluate the lesion, and decide if a biopsy or removal is necessary. Do not rely on 'home remedies' for skin patches that do not heal. If you are worried, schedule a professional skin screening.
