About Timeless Black & White Portraits
A monochrome shoot is not just about removing the color, it is about mastering light. When we shoot in our HSR Layout studio, we use specific side-lighting techniques to contour the bump and highlight the texture of your gown. It takes a little extra time to set the shadows just right, which is why we suggest our 2-hour or 3-hour sessions for these looks. It gives us the room to experiment without feeling rushed.
Why choose black and white? It makes everything feel permanent. Colors can fade, but the shape of a silhouette or the shadow of a hand on a belly stays classic.
We find that clients who are nervous about posing actually feel more comfortable in monochrome because the focus is on their expression rather than the background or the dress color. When you book a session with us, let us know if you have a preference for high-key (lots of bright white) or low-key (dramatic shadows). We have the studio space in HSR Layout to control the lighting environment completely.
Do not worry about the wardrobe. We can guide you on which of our gowns from our collection will work best with high-contrast lighting. Plain, form-fitting dresses almost always look better than patterns for these shots. Whether you are coming in solo or with your partner, these portraits are designed to be heirlooms for your family.
