Summer heat makes long walks tough, but that doesn't mean your dog has to get bored. Here are some simple, low-cost ways to keep them active and mentally stimulated inside your house.

Here's a quick and easy recipe for a healthy snack using a licky mat or a simple bowl. I've mixed yogurt, banana, and some of my healthy cookies to create an engaging and delicious treat that will keep your dog busy.

When it's too hot to go outside, indoor exercises are a must. In this video, I show you three simple enrichment activities, including puzzles with egg trays and hiding treats in cardboard boxes, to keep your dog mentally stimulated.

About Fun & Enrichment Ideas

If your pup gets restless indoors, you don't need fancy, expensive toys to keep them happy. Try hiding their favorite functional biscuits in an old egg tray or spreading some curd and banana on a licky mat. These simple tricks channel their energy constructively, save your furniture from being chewed, and turn a regular treat session into a brain game that tires them out just as much as a walk.

Mental exhaustion is just as important as physical exercise for your dog. When the temperature spikes and you can't step out, or if you are busy with work, your dog still needs a job to do to stay calm and happy.

Why Enrichment Works

Most behavioral issues like excessive barking, chewing on shoes, or jumping happen because our dogs are bored. They have energy, and they need a healthy outlet.

My Favorite Indoor DIY Hacks

  1. The Foraging Game: Take a clean egg tray or a cardboard box. Place a few of my functional cookies inside and close it. Let them figure out how to open it to get the reward. It builds confidence and patience.

  2. The Licky Mat Session: Spreading dog-safe ingredients like yogurt, mashed banana, or a bit of peanut butter (xylitol-free) on a licky mat is a great way to help them settle down. The repetitive licking motion releases endorphins and keeps them focused.

  3. The Hide and Seek: You don't need a massive garden. Use different rooms in your house and hide treats in corners. Let them use their nose to find them. This uses up a lot of mental energy.

The Role of Nutrition in Play

I always say, pair these games with healthy, high-quality rewards. My functional cookies—whether it is the Hip & Joints or Immunity blends—are perfect for these puzzles because you can break them into smaller pieces. You are not just feeding them, you are making them 'work' for their food, which is closer to their natural behavior. Remember, keep the AC on, keep them hydrated, and turn these small moments into bonding time.
