About Nail School: Tips, Tricks & Education
People often think getting extensions is just about the final look, but the real magic is in the prep and product quality. I have seen too many clients come to me after a bad experience with generic, heavy acrylics that damage the natural plate. Let’s talk about why choosing between polygel and builder gel matters, how a Russian manicure keeps your cuticles healthy, and the simple habits that stop your beautiful nails from lifting or snapping prematurely.
Know Your Product: The Polygel vs. Acrylic Debate
Many clients come in asking for acrylics because it's what they've heard of. But here is the reality: traditional acrylics aren't flexible. They are rigid, which means they can pull and stress your natural nail plate over time, making it brittle. That is why I advocate for Polygel.
Think of Polygel as the perfect hybrid. It has the strength of acrylic but the flexibility of builder gel. It is much easier to control, stays put at the cuticle line, and feels more natural. Whether you are getting a fresh set or a refill, asking your technician what they use is the first step to better nail health.
The Russian Manicure Difference
You might have seen the e-file being used on my Instagram. That is the Russian Manicure. Unlike a regular soak-and-cut manicure, this is a dry technique. We use precision e-file bits to gently remove dead skin around the cuticle area. Why? Because clean, dry cuticles mean the gel sits flush against your nail, which translates to a cleaner look that lasts weeks without lifting.
Can You Use Nails as Tools?
Spoiler alert: No.
This is the number one reason extensions snap. Do not use your nails to press elevator buttons, open soda cans, or scratch your scalp. Use your knuckles or the side of your finger. If you treat your extensions like tools, they will eventually break. If you treat them like art, they will stay looking fresh until your next appointment.
