Inclusive Basketball Coaching: Lessons from the Sets of Sitaare Zameen Par
Working as the basketball coach for Aamir Khan Productions changed how I teach. I bring that same patience, adaptive methodology, and 'Tu Hai Champion' spirit to my inclusive basketball sessions for children with special needs at Celebration Sports Club.
On set, my role was to guide the young actors through every basketball scene. It required patience and a deep understanding of how to adapt my coaching methods for a film environment, working closely with the director and Aamir Khan.
This trailer captures the heart of 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. My work was to ensure the basketball moments were believable and empowering for the actors, reflecting the film's message of inclusivity and determination.
Meet Sharmaji, one of the shining stars of the film. Working with talented actors like him was a highlight of my career and a testament to what individuals with special needs can achieve.
Golu's character brought so much energy to the screen. Coaching her and the other kids for the movie was an unforgettable experience in adaptive sports training for a major motion picture.
About Coaching for the Big Screen: 'Sitaare Zameen Par'
On the set of Sitaare Zameen Par, I learned that coaching special needs athletes is about adapting to the individual, not forcing them into a rigid structure. My sessions at Celebration Sports Club are designed around this philosophy. We don't just run drills; we focus on finding each child's rhythm, building motor skills through play, and ensuring every student feels like a winner, whether they are on a film set or just learning to dribble on our Andheri West court.
When you train a cast of kids with special needs for a feature film, you realize that basketball is about more than just points on a scoreboard. It is about confidence, teamwork, and finding your unique strength. My time with the production team was an intensive lesson in patience and adaptation—skills I now use daily with my students in Mumbai.
Why My Inclusive Program Works
Many sports programs operate on a 'one-size-fits-all' model. That doesn't work here. I create an environment where every child feels safe to experiment and learn at their own pace. Whether a child has Down syndrome or motor challenges, my goal is the same: to turn them into a champion in their own life.
- Adaptive Methodology: I break down complex skills like ball handling and defensive stance into manageable steps. If a child needs more time on a skill, we take it.
- Social Integration: The court is where friendships form. We prioritize interaction and teamwork, ensuring no child feels left out.
- Positive Reinforcement: We use the 'Tu Hai Champion' philosophy to celebrate progress, no matter how small. A successful dribble is a victory.
Where We Train
Sessions are held at Celebration Sports Club, Andheri West. We use an outdoor synthetic hard court, providing a clean, safe, and professional environment. Classes are held in the evening (5 PM to 6 PM), which is perfect for winding down after school and getting some active time in.
What to Expect
If you are ready to start, we offer a discovery session where your child joins our existing batch. This isn't just a trial; it is an assessment where I observe their motor skills and comfort levels so we can tailor a development path that actually works for them. My team and I are here to support your child's journey, from their first bounce to their personal best.
