Mumbai’s rain isn’t just weather; it’s a mood. I capture the city’s restless spirit and poetic chaos when the skies open up, turning wet streets into frames of pure, unfiltered cinema.

A boy captured mid-flight as he dives into the historic Banganga Tank during a downpour. This is a classic, joyful Mumbai monsoon moment.

A group of friends braving the powerful waves at Marine Drive. This black and white shot emphasizes the raw power of the sea during high tide.

Using a slow shutter, I captured the motion of people with umbrellas walking past the historic buildings near CSMT, creating a cinematic, painterly effect.

A man stands against the stormy sea as a massive wave crashes over the promenade. This video captures the dramatic and sometimes dangerous beauty of the monsoon.

A study in contrasts at Banganga Tank: one person stands shielded by an umbrella while another leaps joyfully into the water.

A child uses an umbrella almost like a parachute while jumping into the water, a playful and unique monsoon memory captured at Banganga.

A typical rainy day in South Mumbai, with a red BEST bus and a classic black-and-yellow taxi navigating the wet streets.

A compilation of monsoon moments across Mumbai, from the Gateway of India to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, capturing the city's romantic and gloomy mood.

Another angle of a boy diving into the Banganga Tank, his body arched in a moment of pure freedom and fun.

A different perspective of the scene at Banganga, showing the contrast between the still observer with an umbrella and the active diver.

About Mumbai in the Monsoon

Monsoon photography isn't just about grabbing a camera; it's about anticipating the rhythm of the city. Whether it’s the sudden rush of a crowd at Marine Drive or the quiet stillness at Banganga, I focus on the in-between moments—the ones you’d usually miss while running for cover. My approach is to move with the rain, not fight it, capturing the genuine interaction between Mumbaikars and the monsoon.

The monsoon is when Mumbai truly sheds its mask. For me, it is the best time to shoot because the city slows down just enough to reveal its stories. I don't set up lights or stage scenes; the rain provides all the texture, reflection, and moody lighting I need.

My Approach to Monsoon Storytelling

  • Natural Light & Mood: I rely entirely on ambient light, embracing the grey skies and high-contrast gloom of the monsoon. It creates that signature cinematic grain and soft focus that makes a photograph feel like a memory.
  • Iconic Locations: From the historic steps of Banganga Tank, where the water tells a story of heritage, to the relentless waves at Marine Drive, I know exactly where the city's pulse is strongest during a downpour.
  • The #BeAmateur Philosophy: My goal is to capture the 'everyday.' A child jumping into a puddle, office-goers waiting for a bus in the rain, or the simple silhouette of an umbrella against a stormy backdrop—these are the candid event moments that matter.

Why Choose This Style?

If you are looking for stiff, posed studio shots, I am probably not the right fit. But if you want a visual narrative that feels alive—whether for a personal project, a brand collaboration, or just to document the spirit of the season—this is it. I work with Sony Alpha gear, but I am just as comfortable with a phone if that’s what helps get the shot without intruding on the scene. We aren't making advertisements; we are documenting the rain-soaked poetry of Mumbai.

I'm Shivam. For me, Mumbai isn't a location; it's a character that changes personality every time it rains. I don't do formal; I just follow the storms and wait for the city to reveal its story, whether that's at Banganga or a crowded street corner.
