Dahi Handi is pure adrenaline, faith, and organized chaos. I don't stage these moments; I chase the messy, real energy of Mumbai’s Govindas as they rise to break the handi.

The climax of the Dahi Handi celebration. This video captures the exact moment the Govinda breaks the pot, showering everyone below in a burst of color and water.

The formation of the human pyramid is a display of incredible focus and teamwork. This sequence shows the layers building up to reach the handi.

A powerful moment of success as a Govinda smashes the pot, with vibrant red liquid splashing down, symbolizing the festive spirit of Janmashtami.

A collage of different Dahi Handi moments, from the focused gaze of a child Govinda to the successful breaking of the pot.

An abstract, artistic take on the Dahi Handi festival. The swirling motion blur represents the dizzying energy and vibrant colors of the crowd below.

A view from the crowd, looking up at the human pyramid against the backdrop of a traditional Mumbai chawl, capturing the community atmosphere of the event.

About The Spirit of Dahi Handi

Dahi Handi happens in seconds, and my photography approach reflects that speed. If you are looking for clean, posed group shots, I am not the right fit for your event. I shoot for the climb, the sweat, and the breaking of the pot using natural light and high shutter speeds. It is documentary work, not a studio setup, so expect candid frames that capture the intensity of the pyramid formation rather than stiff portraits.

How I Shoot Dahi Handi

When I am on the ground, I am usually in the thick of the crowd. This festival is about the height of the pyramid and the tension in the air. To get the best shots, I focus on:

  • The Ascent: Tracking the individual Govindas as they climb, focusing on their grip and focus.
  • The Break: Timing the shutter for the exact second the handi shatters and the contents spill.
  • The Aftermath: The exhaustion and celebration on the ground.

Practical Details

  • Rain and Gear: I am comfortable shooting in the monsoon. My gear is rain-ready, and I don't use intrusive external flash, which allows me to blend into the chaos without becoming a distraction to the participants.
  • Drone Coverage: For larger events, I use the DJI Air 2S to capture the scale of the gathering from above. It helps show the sheer volume of the crowd and the intricacy of the human structures.
  • My Style: I prefer grainy, high-contrast, and sometimes motion-blurred aesthetic over clean digital perfection. It conveys the speed and life of the festival better than a static, sharp image ever could.

Working Together

My packages range from candid stills to hybrid coverage with highlight reels. Since this is a high-energy environment, I suggest we discuss the location and the scale of your mandal well in advance so I can plan my movement, especially if we are planning aerial shots.
