This video provides some short and simple tips for preparing for plastic surgery. Following these steps can make a big difference in your safety and recovery.
Here are some expert-backed care tips to prepare your body for a smooth and safe surgery experience. Proper preparation is the first step toward a great result.
It is very important to never self-medicate before surgery. Always consult with me about any medications or supplements you are taking to avoid any potential risks or complications.
I advise all my patients to stop smoking and drinking alcohol at least two weeks before surgery. This simple step significantly promotes better healing and reduces the risk of complications.
A nutritious, high-protein diet is essential before surgery. Eating well strengthens your immune system and provides your body with the building blocks it needs to speed up recovery.
Avoid processed and junk foods before your procedure. These foods can increase inflammation in the body, which can slow down the natural healing process after surgery.
Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is crucial. Proper hydration supports your body's natural healing process and helps keep your skin healthy and resilient.
Swelling is a normal part of recovery. In this video, I share five effective tips to help reduce swelling after plastic surgery, including using cold compresses and gentle movement.
About Preparing for Surgery and Aftercare
The most important phase of your surgery starts two weeks before you enter the operating theatre. You must stop smoking and alcohol consumption completely, as these directly interfere with blood flow and tissue healing. I also need a full list of your current medications, including any supplements or herbal vitamins, because certain substances can affect anesthesia safety and post-operative bleeding.
Surgery is a team effort. My role is to perform the procedure, but your role is to prepare your body to receive it.
The Two-Week Rule
Most complications arise from things the patient didn't think were important. Do not stop at just your main medications. If you take fish oil, turmeric, or green tea extracts, you must pause them. These can act as blood thinners. We need your blood to clot normally and your skin to have optimal oxygen flow to reduce scarring.
Nutrition for Healing
Think of your body as a construction site. After surgery, it needs building blocks to repair the incisions. A high-protein diet is non-negotiable. I recommend incorporating dal, paneer, eggs, or lean meat in every meal for at least two weeks leading up to the procedure. Avoid processed sugar and high-sodium foods, which cause fluid retention and make swelling worse.
After Surgery: Managing Swelling
Patients often worry about the swelling. It is a natural response. You do not need to stay in bed for days. Gentle movement improves circulation, which actually flushes out fluid faster. Use cold compresses for the first 48 hours to manage discomfort. If you follow these steps, you will see a much faster return to your daily life.
