About Additional Designs & Motifs
Every motif I draw has a specific purpose in the design. When I work on a heavy Indian design, I use techniques like Meenakari shading and fine line work to ensure elements like elephants and peacocks stand out against the filler patterns. It is not just about covering skin, it is about balancing these traditional symbols to create a cohesive pattern that looks rich and bold from a distance, while remaining delicate and detailed up close.
The beauty of traditional Indian mehendi lies in the stories these motifs tell. Over the years in Mumbai, I have found that my clients often want more than just random patterns. They want symbols that have meaning.
Why These Motifs Matter
- Peacocks: These are the most requested design for a reason. They represent grace and elegance, and I like to draw them with intricate tail feathers that blend into the surrounding lines.
- Elephants: Often drawn with umbrellas or royal headgear, these are a classic symbol of luck and royalty in Indian weddings. I focus on keeping the eyes and tusks clear to maintain that sharp, clean look.
- Lotus and Floral Work: I use these to soften the design. When paired with heavy, dense Meenakari shading, the floral elements provide a necessary break for the eyes, making the overall piece feel balanced rather than cluttered.
My Technical Approach
My process is rooted in patience. I use a triple-sifted natural Sojat henna that flows smoothly, allowing for the precise, fine lines that these complex designs require. Whether I am doing a dense bridal sleeve or a smaller guest design, I never rush the border work. The 'bhari' (heavy) style you see in my gallery relies on consistency. If the checks are not uniform or the shading is too light, the whole design loses its impact. I ensure every stroke serves the final look, giving you a dark, rich stain that lasts.
