Our Musical Philosophy and Teaching Approach
Music is about more than just reading notes for us. We teach to spark joy, build confidence, and help you find your own voice. Whether you are three or seventy-five, we invite you to join our journey of learning and expression.
Our founder, Vivek, explains the thoughtful structure of our percussion program. He discusses how students progress from the Djembe to the Cajon and drum kit, developing essential skills like coordination and timing in a supportive environment.
This video shows a glimpse into our "Introduction to Music" program for our youngest learners. Through interactive play with instruments like the guitar and Djembe, we help toddlers develop listening skills, creativity, and a foundational love for music.
It's never too early to start a musical journey. This image from our musical summer camp shows toddlers engaged in a rhythm activity with colorful bucket drums, showcasing our focus on making music accessible and fun for children as young as three.
We believe our teachers are real-life superheroes. This creative portrait introduces our percussion instructor, Kris, highlighting his passion and the instruments he uses to inspire students, including the Djembe which is central to our drum circles.
We love to have fun with our community online and offline. This video uses a popular social media trend to imagine our academy in a Ghibli-inspired anime style, capturing the warm, creative, and inclusive spirit of our music school.
About Our Musical Philosophy
We don't just teach you to play; we teach you to listen. For our percussion students, this means starting on a Djembe to master rhythm, moving to a Cajon for dynamics, and finally graduating to the drum kit. This structured path builds the coordination and timing you actually need to play in a real band, rather than just playing along to a backing track.
Why We Teach the Way We Do
At 88 - The Piano Academy, our approach is built on a foundation of 'Joie de Vivre'—the joy of living. We believe that music education shouldn't be a chore or a series of rigid drills. Instead, it is a way to find your own confidence, whether you are a seven-month-old toddler exploring sounds or an adult picking up the guitar for the first time.
The Percussion Journey
Our percussion program is a prime example of our philosophy in action. We don't throw you behind a full drum kit on day one. We take you through a journey: starting with the Djembe to understand foundational rhythm and call-and-response, moving to the Cajon to learn texture and dynamics, and eventually, the full drum kit. By the time our students reach the kit, they aren't just hitting drums; they understand how to use their whole body to create music.
Performance Over Theory
We focus heavily on real-world application. Learning music is only half the battle; the rest happens on stage. That is why we organize recitals and performances at venues like the NCPA. Seeing a student transform from a shy beginner into someone who can confidently hold their own on a big stage is the most rewarding part of what we do. It takes chaos and dedication to get there, but that is exactly what makes the music feel real.
Join the Community
Beyond our formal classes in Tardeo, we bring the rhythm to the community. Our drum circles are designed to break down barriers, allowing groups of any age or experience level to connect through sound. You don't need a musical background to join our academy. You just need the curiosity to start, and the willingness to let a little bit of madness into your routine.
