Private Residences: Designing Homes as a Dialogue with Materials
A home is more than structure; it is a tapestry of memory. We design private villas and urban spaces where raw materials age with grace, creating a living connection between your daily life and the environment.
The central staircase of the Brick House is a non-linear journey through the home. Its sharp, geometric forms in black pigmented plaster create a powerful contrast with the warmth of the exposed brick walls.
In the Brick House, we created moments of connection between different levels. A view from an upper corridor looks down into a living space, framed by raw concrete and brick, under a skylight that bathes the interior in natural light.
The entrance foyer of the Brick House sets a contemplative tone. Fluted concrete walls, black stone flooring, and strategically placed brickwork create a rich textural experience, animated by light from the staggered windows above.
The kitchen and dining area in the Brick House, where a double-height ceiling and large doors create an airy, light-filled space. The material palette of brick, wood, and dark stone is honest and tactile.
The facade of Project 58 is a living entity, with lush greenery cascading over a screen of custom terracotta blocks. This design embodies our philosophy of creating porous architecture that breathes with its landscape.
A view from a bridge in Project 58, looking down into a verdant courtyard. The design breaks down the mass of the building, weaving pockets of nature throughout the home to create a sense of living within a garden.
At Project 1374, a private terrace extends from the living room, blurring the boundary between inside and out. The design borrows trees from the street, integrating them into the home's narrative and creating a secluded, green sanctuary.
A view from a bedroom in Project 1374, where private spaces are designed as quiet cocoons. A large sliding glass door opens onto a private court, ensuring a constant connection to nature while maintaining seclusion.
A detail in Project 1374 showing the tactile richness of local materials. A curved wall finished in red textured plaster meets a floor of patterned black and white marble, creating a dialogue that is both intuitive and intentional.
The dramatic play of light and shadow across a staircase in Project 1374. A bright red wall is activated by linear shadows, transforming a simple circulation space into a dynamic visual composition.
About Private Residences: A Dialogue with Materials
We build physical scale models for every project, allowing us to study how light and shadow move across materials like brick and lime plaster before we break ground. It ensures that your home is not a static image, but a space that breathes and evolves with the time of day.
Architecture, for us, is a process of unearthing potential. When we work on private residences, we aren't just arranging rooms; we are creating a porous boundary between the interior and the landscape.
The Material Narrative
We prefer materials that tell the truth. Whether it is the thermal mass of exposed brick, the tactile cooling of red oxide flooring, or the structured warmth of rammed earth, we select elements that age alongside you. These materials are not just finishes; they are active participants in your home’s story.
Our Process
Our design journey is non-linear by design. We begin with a deep dive into the site’s history and its environmental context—what we call the 'lived tradition' of the space.
- Contextual Analysis: We look for ways to pull in local light and breeze, often borrowing existing trees or street-side views to integrate them into your private sanctuary.
- Collaborative Craft: Our studio works hand-in-hand with local artisans. This means we are often on-site, guiding the application of lime plaster or the weaving of bamboo screens, ensuring the final detail matches the conceptual intent.
- Spatial Flow: We prioritize social connectivity. You will find that our designs focus on creating courtyards, terraces, and transition spaces—areas where family life naturally unfolds rather than being confined to rigid, singular-use rooms.
Whether you are renovating a traditional home in Mangaluru or planning a new villa in the green pockets of Bengaluru, our goal is to build spaces that feel as though they have always belonged to the land.
The Purple Ink Studio
We are a collective of designers who treat every site as a conversation waiting to happen. We don't just fill rooms with furniture; we work with the land and local artisans to build homes that are rooted in their specific context.
